An Adventure in Aldra (Intrest/Recruitment)

Post by Quarg » Sun Dec 25, 2016 2:32 pm

The Emperor is Dead!
Long live the Empress! Taldra'Quesa, Dragon of Aldra, Zinuxa of the Mar!

The Emperor is Dead!
Long live the Empress! Taldara'Quesa, Dragon of Aldra, Zinuxa of the Mar!

Prince Marku ground his teeth as heard the paper boy run down the street, calling out the news. He narrowed his eyes and snarled. "Upstart..." but his swear died off as he realized that a new standard was rising up above the Gerhorn Palace. Two flying Blue dragons quartered with two of flying black cats. It must be the standard of Taldara of House Quesa.

Which means that Taza Oberon of House Qin had failed...
That the upstart, who had taken his rightful place as Heir, had reached the city alive...
He turned and blessed himself that he was at his mistress's flat in the city and not his rooms in Qin House...
For if Oberon had failed, then the hounds would be after him...
He needed to escape to the Folds, the ancient homeland of his ancestors the warrior Mar, and raise his standard there...
There he would raise an army, to take his rightful place as Emperor...
Prince Marku'Qin did not look back over his shoulder, just turned to run...run for the Folds, and his destiny.

************************************
So recently I've had some time to myself to think of ideas about a world/story...
And thought that perhaps I should poke at those ideas by playing an RPG inside of said world...
And now I am soliciting interest in playing in my little world...

What
So the concept is to play this as a RISUS based game to save us all time in character creation and trying to perfectly generate a balanced character.
What is RISUS? The basic description and rules are below
► Show Spoiler
When and Where
The story is set in a fantasy world much like the late 17th century. There is magic but also early fire arms in this world as well as most of the fictional races. The story will begin in the city of Tarhoe, former city state, then regional, then the imperial capital for a few decades. Now it has revered to being a semi-prosperous port city on the western side of the Aldra Empire. The story will begin in the old Protector's Palace, Court of Uxe, a Guildhall for mercenaries. (Which is a semi-respectable professional choice within the empire and the city.

Who
There following restrictions on 'class':
That it has to fit in the time period.
That they have a reason for being in a mercenary inn.
That if they are Mar, the human race that rules the Empire, then they automatically need to have one "fighting" cliche and a "force magic" cliche but get an automatic + 2 Shield Spell bonus for each "Fighting" cliche.

The following race restrictions do apply:
Elves, known as K'zar, are quite long lived and get a bonus die. Unfortunately, they get an automatic hook of being a race hated by all other races for spending a few thousand years of either warring with all the other nations or conquering them.

Vampires - please pm me with your idea because of limitations on vampires are complex, related to the story.

Goblins - Seafaring race from the far isles to the southwest

Dwarves- Race that lives on the continent of Zur across the sea to the south

All player races should be within a human range (less that 8 feet)

If you need ideas, please ask.

Human size limit please

How
If your interested just post a character idea, or ask a question. I will likely be taking up to six players for this game, based on first to post a character.

An example:
Name: Tommy 'Tinwhistle' Macsu
Race: Goblin
Appearance: about 1.2 meters tall, with gray green skin, blue eyes, rather large pointy ears and is completely bald. Wears baggy clothing of bla and a tricorn hat on his head with a feather.
Background: Tommy grew up wanting to be a musician. Unfortunately his parents were a Pirate and Assassin in the isle of Rios. So he learned the family business but now he tries to make his way primarily being a musician...which he is only marginally good at. However since he is a decent cook (having had to cook for himself because his parents were off doing things besides taking care of the kids) most of the bands have let him tag along until they find someone better.

Cliches: Assassin (Ninja) - (4). Pirate-(3), Cook(2), Musician (1)
Gear: Rapier +1
Daggers +1
Banjo +1
And both I and Burns were having similar ideas with the whole Pirate Ninja theme...

And now for some guidance on the Mar...

Hm... Man, I'm bad at making characters. Give me some time.

I'm thinking I want to play a beast-wizard who specialises in Summon Bigger Fish. :P
My game:
Hunters of Letrua; Character list
Also Player / Monster stats, skill lists.

My characters:
Tugs Tails, the goblin that was sort of a trapper and wears a bear's tail at his neck, for some reason - Lair of the Mountain King (Run by Thinks)
Alex Sparo, A city boy, poor of sight, who has learned to manipulate people and make the most of what he, and others, have - Trinity Isles (Run by Mort)
Mehriv Turajin, a Noble Dragonborn Sorcerer sent from his clan because he wasn't dragony enough. - The Wandering Archipelago (Run by Thinks)

Leaning towards a spy/saboteur character. Or a bard. Something where I can ask questions first, and then go blow something up.

Are there any dark elves within the K'zar?

...is it bad that all of my ideas are more outrageous than that? Anyways...I guess I should post snipits of my ideas on here as well

A siren that controls water, An awakened small (bonsai?) tree that can uses telekensis, A Werewolf dog of dogception that summons dogs and transform into other types of dogs, a lazy cat that may or may not have powers, an undead pirate robot ninja, the worst singer in history but is a bard that sings, and a giant with a pet mountian named Bolder, but now I think the rocks name should be Pebble.

Oh! Another idea! Inteligent weapon, forced to be here via wielder, hates the wielder and wants them gone. Powers may vary???

Wait, if this is Risus-based, do we have to put dice into our race? Was that even a Risus thing? Like, "I'm a Rank 1 Human. People aren't quite sure that's actually right," or just "I'm a human?" I'm taking the Dwarf cliche anyway, since doing generally dwarf-y things may be beneficial and in most settings they're decent in brawls too.

Anyways.

Name: Dwar fesh the Dwarfed
Race: Dwarf
Gender: Bearded Male
Age: 58
Physicality: 4'0", 155lb
Appearance: Dwar fesh, despite being remarkably short, even for a dwarf, is heavily built to compensate, though his weight is mostly muscle. His clay-brown hair is kept neat, pulled back into a short tail, though his beard grows freely, reaching all the way to his waist.
Affiliations: Dorfinc, Dwarfortifications Unlimited, Little Lawyer League
Cliches:
  • Dwarf (3) (Tolkien style)
  • Beast-Wizard (4)
  • Hunter (3)

Given Quarg is back and Tea is around, can we still play our Pathfinder game too? (I love Makita Pantalion!)

Since there really isn't alignments there can not be evil K'zar...and only dwarves like to live underground.
But if you want to have the attributes of seeing in the dark, being sneaky, and elvish than yeah you can say use 'Drow-ish' as a cliche.
Dlover wrote:Wait, if this is Risus-based, do we have to put dice into our race?
No, but if you want to use dwarf as a cliche tell me who's dwarf (A tolkien dwarf? a 3.5 dwarf?...)

And a bit more detail like background and height would be appreciated also there Dlover...

I'd love to do that, but were still missing A...and my time is still somewhat limited. This game sort of easily fell out and it isn't going to be that long.
If I get the new hires through training and they take the load off me at work starting in March...then yeah we can start it up again.

I'm less interested in being Drow-ish. For some reason the idea of having a character with a reason to be hated by everyone appeals to me at the moment. But if there's hope for the Immortals, I think I'd rather try something besides an elf. I have another idea for the character, but it's a bit on the dark and serious side.

Serious is alright, I am using the system less for the comic and more for the ease...
You could also play a Mar character...who are not exactly beloved...more like being at least somewhat fair and keep the nasty Protectorate away...

Alright, fleshed out the details.

Background: Being particularly short for a dwarf, Dwar fesh found himself in an odd social position, between those who ridiculed his peculiar stature and those who were simply impressed by his ability to reach anything above the ground, though both groups adopted the nickname "Dwar the Dwarfed." Infuriated, more so by the latter group than the former, Dwar took to sculpting himself into a man none could question. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, no matter the workout regimen, Dwar never achieved the strength he sought, and in the end simply asked a traveling magic user to teach him to be "Mightier than a bear." Of course, wizards rarely know proper exercise routines, so the wizard opted to teach him the ways of beast magic, so the young dwarf could simply be whatever it was that he wanted to be stronger than at any time. Which, admittedly, would only make him equally strong and not stronger, but it was close enough for Dwar to accept. During his training, Dwar was taught to think as the beasts do, do as the beasts do, and drink like an absolute monster. Well, that last part was training for a drinking competition, but it was training nonetheless. Well, regardless of the training, eventually came the day when Dwar decided to prove his worth, and did so by turning into a bear and collecting objects from unreasonably high shelves. Inspired by his great success, Dwar decided to go out into the world, and this time prove to the world itself that his stature wouldn't hold him back from anything.

Dlover...not sure that beast magic was supposed to be trans mutative into animals just allow to influence/control animals.

Spider...Would love to have you in on this game...looking for someone who will poke at things and you'd be great at that.

Aaand, here goes...

Name: (Ignatius) Pyre the Elder
Race: Mar
Gender: Male
Pyre the Elder is of average height and less than average build (5ÔÇÖ5ÔÇØ, 145 lbs). He has just survived his 40th winter and sometimes he thinks itÔÇÖs about time to settle himself down in some quiet village too small to attract the empireÔÇÖs attention. But, he thinks, there is too much still left undoneÔÇöfar, far too muchÔÇöso he stays. He is, to his knowledge, the last of his bloodline and he plans to go out, when he must, in a great blaze of glory. Oh, he will make sure it is great, and that it will take as many of his enemies out with him as possible. He keeps his beard long and his clothes defiantly out of fashion. He favors black; it matches his beard and doesnÔÇÖt need to be washed constantly to keep its color.

Pyre the Elder has always liked to blow things up. Consequently, whenever thereÔÇÖs a fire anywhere, thereÔÇÖs a guard on his tail asking questionsÔÇöeven if he wasnÔÇÖt even anywhere near the site of the accident. Even if he was at home, alone, in bed, and dreaming that he had to convince the dragon in his closet to give him the right set of robes because his late father demanded his presence at this weekÔÇÖs extravagant dinner party and was informed of the accident only by the familiar rapping at his door that roused him from the negotiations with said dragon. Thrice in the last week this has happened; Pyre wonders if something is not getting out of hand, but he worries more that his patron will cease to need his services if he draws too much attention to himselfÔÇöand if that happens, he doubts his patron will be forgiving and let him walk away with all of the secrets heÔÇÖs gathered, no, Pyre will likely have to be untimely silenced.

He seeks neutral ground. He has a friend in the MercenariesÔÇÖ Guild who can ensure him a room and whom he trusts to keep his tongue. He needs to meet with his patron, assure this person that he still supports his patronÔÇÖs interests. He hopes he can lay low here, or, at least enjoy nights of uninterrupted sleep while the situation cools down. The inn is generally held to be under the GuildÔÇÖs jurisdiction; the guard will think twice before trying to apprehend him here, although, the GuildÔÇÖs influence will not help him if they politely wait outside to accost him for questioning.

Clich├®s: (The only problem is I'm not sure which of these is the most fighting one(s). He's inherited the Mar's fighting spirit more than any aptitude with weapons at this point and will probably be relying more heavily on his magics. Anything but the spy I can see being used mostly for combat.)

Thanks spider for noting that, I pulled that from a RISUS document on spell guidance and missed the 'turning into animals' as part of the Beast-Master. I was more focused on helping someone else out of a Cliche issue when it occurred to me.

So your fine there Dlover, my bad.

Clearly the arsonist Cliche would give him the required knowledge to work out the most efficient method of burninating everything. :P

Oh, I probably need gear, don't I? Uh, okay then... What sort of tools do magic users use? Wands, staves, rings, orbs? I guess any of the above?

Two(ish) answers.
#1. Turns out the word I wanted is saboteur all along. An arsonist doesn't need the fire, but the saboteur can break things that aren't easily flammable. I was thinking it would be useful for determining places to strategically place explosives (or fireballs) or just being familiar with some building layouts (even if he's not planning on defacing it). And he might know someone who can supply the gunpowder/other explosives. Fire is nice, but I don't exactly see a fireball waiting politely after it's been planted until the right time to go off.
#2. I was thinking it's a middling family. One of the family legends is that they used to be quite powerful, but I don't know that there's any historic proof of that.
