we should not do the docks while the people are too scared to work on the outside. money will not help them move faster. I don't want to waste a coffer on the docks when we can wait until after the citizens are less scared to work outside the walls. Besides, it may accidently get them killed due to the ants.

I'm not that enthusiastic about the moat, but I agree we shouldn't waste time building docks now while there's no-one willing to do the work.

"Artisan, Marshall, Dragonknight. You are all experienced in warfare and know what this city needs most just now. What would you recommend I do? Can you build me a moat?"

At least with building the docks most of the buildings will be out of direct contact with the ants, building a moat at this time puts them even closer to danger and I think they will be just as unwilling (maybe more so) to go there. I still say starting the docks is a good option for the future. Same with the moat just not currently.

They weren't so afraid to build docks, they are afraid to do forestry and mining, which are further out. Which makes dealing with this issue even more important, if we've no industries, we are hampered in all aspects.

Magister: "Can you create an explosion? A controlled one, I mean. Like a fire blast, but... delayed?"

An aerial attack from us directly on the dig site could be the most effective way of sealing the breach. We'd probably lose everything there, but it might be worth having the option available to us in case we can't override the ants' mind-control.

Working on the moat will put them literally at our walls. We can spot the ants coming, and they can be inside the walls well before the ants even get close.

>It is the 309th year after slumber.
>It is Summer.

The weather turns hot as the sun moves past it's highest point as the season passes. Sadly this only seems to give the creatures more and more incentive to send greater and greater waves- And somehow, greater and greater complexity. Luckily, thanks to the Marshall the city stays well-defended, as you make sure to chip in your own support from time to time to improve the morale of men, roasting the beasts from above. Still... It almost seems too easy- But even your men will grow weary over time, and even you cannot stop such an assault on your own. You can only imagine how Rhenovia is dealing with the issue...

Image

"Greetings sire." a clearly tired Marshall says as he comes to report in near the end of the season- The poor man has been trying to man the walls as much as possible, leaving things only to his second in command to eat or sleep, and it shows. But noting your concern he offers a smile. "You'll be glad to hear that the main defenses kept. The townsfolk who worked in the mines might have been too scared to go out there to work, but they proved to make themselves useful in providing hot tar or other things to be thrown against any ant that would climb the wall. The intensity has been increasing to an extent... But as things stand, we should be able to defend."

"Still... If there's a greater conscience behind these attacks sire, I think I fear all too well what it's plan is- It's to exhaust us. Quite literally. The farms lie outside the city- For now we got enough in the granary to last us a while, but until the people get desperate enough nobody is going to risk exiting the city... I hope the Magisters work proves worthwhile. We'll need all help we can get to stop this menace right at the source..."

>The city has been kept defended.

Image

The DragonKnights news however, seems to not be as well- As she slumps down to one knee in front of you, face to the ground and sword in front of her.

"I am sorry my lord. I have failed you once more. You bestowed upon me the task of capturing one of the larger ants for the Magisters purposes- In this I may have succeeded... But it came at the cost of some of our men."

"2 Units were to escort me in this task. We figured a head-on assault would be too tricky- The commanders have shown tedency to escape before the battle is done, and fighting through a small army of the ants would be dangerous. So the plan we came up with was that our units would hide further out, and wait for an attack to pass us by- Performing a pincer movement on the commander as we'd try and chase it in one of the many traps we had laid out."

"However... When the assault came, one of the groups was spotted- And assaulted full force. I thank the brave men, since even then they kept to the plan and lead the commander exactly where we would need him- But in doing so they perished. Forgive me."

>Commander ants have been captured for the Magister to study.
>An unit of elite troops has been lost!

Image

You briefly mourn the loss of the men- But decide you have little time for such things, each moment passing by a precious one- Flying off to find the Magister and see if his research on this commander ant would prove fruitful. Though it takes you a while to find him- The Magister nowhere to be found near his lab, with no one seeming to have an idea of where he went. You eventually find him in a place you find strangely fitting, yet would never have expected him- The cemetery. You find yourself confused as you land in a small clearing, coming nearer to see why he is here, but find out soon as you spot the name on the small grave he stands over- "Mulan".

"...I suppose that's another thing I've learnt about them." The Magister says, in his usual raspy voice- "They don't live long. Seems just a little bit more than half a year. At least in the state we kept them. Maybe they need more than just the blue rocks..."

"I suppose it's just another grim reminder... Sooner or later, we all bite the dust." The Magister speaks, standing there for a moment more before unleashing a series of nasty sounding coughs- Recovering himself before starting to move- "Let's leave this place. I don't like it." he says, continuing to talk as you both walk towards his lab. "I've did research on these so-called commander ants... It seems they're similar to the smaller ants in a sense- They seek instructions from higher up, but then want to delegate it to those under it. But... It's also smarter. Smart enough for me to use my magic to manipulate it. I've already ran some tests that ran beautifully- A simple instruction given to the commander, and then soon delegated to the smaller ones as they follow it. However... I tried the obvious command to have him command these ants to turn against their queen and... It refused. Seemed confused, angry. So things will not be that simple, I'm afraid. Though with some ingenuity, no doubt it could be very useful."

"Now, some further complications you should be aware of... While the spell I have spoken off to erase the instructions of these smaller ants is easily cast, the process of domination for these commander ants is not. It takes some time to go through the process, so unless we capture more of them... This is the only one we will be able to use."

>The Magister has researched the commander ant.

Image

"Greetings sire." The artisan says, seeming overjoyed as he arrives. "I'll be honest sire... I was skeptical at first about the moat idea. It took a lot of convincing the people it would be safe enough to stay close to the city, and it was only the promise that this would improve our safety against them that made the men willing to help... But it was all worth it in the end when we decided to flood the current process and see those ants confused at this new obstacle in their path!" The Artisan says excitedly, though that excitement soon dims.

"Of course... Well, the moat is only on the eastern side. I'm sorry sire, but it takes a lot of manpower to dig these trenches- Not to mention I'd need to design either a drawbridge or bridge to cross towards the gate. Luckily it seems that for now the ants are too dumb to have figured that out, so it seems we are safe from them for a little while from within those halls... Though I guess we'll see how long that takes."

"I could continue work and mayhaps finish it by next season sire- Even if the moat would only truly serve it's purpose in future attacks. Or alternatively I could look if there'd be a way to make reaching the farms safe...r. Whatever you wish Sire."

>The Artisan has worked on a moat surrounding the city.

Image

The Regent tips his hat as you cross paths with him for his report- Formally greeting you as he excitedly announces his work.

"Of course, with everything that's been happening, the people were afraid.. Luckily, with the marshall keeping the walls so steadily guarded, and now the Artisan once again providing such magnificent work, that has already improved. So I only made use of that as I provided basic combat training to the populace with help of the schools. And now I dare say I managed to turn that fear around in a sort of... Confidence we'll come through this- Stronger than we started."

>The regent has trained the populace in basic combat.

Image

Finally, it's the spymaster who... Finds you, this time around- You at first don't recognize him in his disguise, but throwing off the wig and replacing it with his usual cloak that is soon lifted.

"As you requested, I visited Morgue... Now, the duchie's not doing too bad, things have been as they mostly always have. They're still a relatively small settlement, but still offer a lot of mage services. Still mostly necromantic purposes what with the necropolis, but that's not saying people can't make use of those services. Considering we have a shortcoming when it comes to magic currently, they could probably help out for the right price."

"They've been having issues as well, however. The greatest one seems to be that they've had a rise in banditry, and don't really have the capacity to deal with it. It also appears they are in a minor dispute with Gravenrogh, seeing as trade and communication between the Duchie and their kingdom has trickled down tremendously. As for their opinion on our situation... Well, it does not appear to be a topic they are particularly interested in as I only caught it by chance, but it does not appear they have any hostility towards us, but seems they're not going to try and extend their own hand first with what's been happening. Should you provide a fair offer however, I'm sure business could be done- And perhaps if the pass was secured once again, trade caravel could travel safely through it once more."

"Now... About that mansion?"

>The Spymaster has investigated Morgue.

Commander ant: control lesser ants that get near us to protect this area.
Magister: try to see ifyou can make the manipulation infective, like a virus or something so that if anothercommander gets in the area it would also be in the influance ofus so we do not have to capture commander ants to control them.

Marshall
Good job, keep it up.

Spymaster
Sounds like that mission was rather easy... Not really mansion-worthy, is it? How about this... That mansion belonged to the Gilden family, as you well know. It is one of their assets that they left in the kingdom, but they fled south taking most of their wealth. The kingdom already has enough enemies south... How about you discreetly eliminate what's left of the Gilden family and you get to keep all the wealth they took with them?
If they are in Servicius or Umilicien, take a good look around and if you find something interesting enough, you might even get the mansion after all. I have some ideas for that playboy persona you mentioned that I believe will be much appreciated.

Dragonknight
The only way to avoid failure is to never attempt anything at all. All we can do to honor them, for now, is to carry on. See if our unit of common troops is recovered enough from their injuries and if so, train them into elite troops. We'll need them.

Artisan
As much as I'd like to have the moats completed as soon as possible, it doesn't matter if we run out of food. If you have good ideas for safe ways to reach the farms, work on them. If that doesn't seem feasible, finish the moat.

Questions for the Magister
Ants usually leave their homes to look for food, queens leave their home to make new nests. Since you were able to get into this Commander Ant's mind, were you able to discover their goal, the reason behind these attacks? Do you think we could use this and to negotiate with the queen? They don't seem to be trying to eat us.
Also, do you think you could mass-cast that "Forgetting Orders" spell in a large group of ants? Or perhaps develop a contagious "Forgetting Orders" disease, based on what you learned about diseases when you developed that plague?

Dragonknight:
"You are not at fault for the losses, dear knight. You could not have prevented the men from being discovered, and had I managed to capture the first commander to assault the city, your task would not have been necessary, and those men would still live. It is a grim reality to know that no war can pass without losses, which even I cannot prevent, but you must not let it hinder you. Remember that those men served bravely, and should be honoured, but do not convince yourself that you are to blame for the losses. If you allow that grief to haunt you, you may not be able to act to your full abilities when necessity arises, and more may be put at risk."

Artisan:
"You have an idea about the farms, if you are making the suggestion, I assume? We still have some reserves of food, but access to more will prove vital in time... Provided the ants do not discover our exposed side, access to the farms would be useful, and the moat could be completed at a later time... If you are confident with preparing access to the farms, do so, but on the first signs of the ants discovering the exposed side of the city the moat's construction needs to be continued. The security of the city and its inhabitants must be ensured."

Regent - good job training the population. Could you try to enlist soldiers to the military?
Artisian - could you research the blue stone?
Marshal - Do we have enough troops to attack the ant at the dig site?
Spymaster - you could use the mansion as long as you work for us. Could you assinate the ant queen?

Spy master- I am willing to give you the mansion, if of course you do use a persona, how ever there is another plan for the mansion some of the people would like, which is to turn it into an orphanage. Image

The Magister shakes his head as you inquire about making the control "infective"- "Impossible. Well, I suppose that's not the completely correct term- Everything is possible when it comes down to magic, but there's yet to be a single mage that has managed to make a mind control spell effective. If you want the closest anyone's ever gotten, take a look at the necropolis and how they act."

"As for the reason they're doing this, I'm afraid not. Once again these commanders are much like soldiers blindly following orders. If there's an intelligence behind it, I do not know what it's motives are, or if it'd be possible to make a deal with... I'm not sure how we would even send a peace message to insects."

"As for the forgetting spell however... Yes, that one I could cast over larger groups at a time, as you command. I could also work on a poison that targets these creatures specifically to try and kill them through that. Of course... We'd need to find somewhere to place it that'd it affect them all."

i supposed you earned it. Now...do you think you have what it takes to ....spy on a nearby ant queen?

The Spymaster at first seems rather angry about being denied the mansion- But his interest becomes piqued as he gets another offer to assassinate the rest of the Gilden- And keep what they might provide.

"Now... That does sound interesting. I don't consider myself an assassin too much, but it should not be too difficult to slip something in their drinks."

"As for the ant queen however. Sire, I wonder- Do you think those insects will fall for my witty disguise? No? Well, there's your answer. There's a vast difference between infiltrating the nests of civilization, and an actual insect lair. I'm comforted to the former, not the latter."

"Also, I hate kids."

Lest not assassinate anybody unless they plan on doing it first. It could cause us problem. Lets give the spy the mansion, and make it into something useful like a library. He can be the libarian.

True, it might be a bit on the evil side to execute them all without even knowing their individual intentions... Though they did flee south, where Umilicien, our main enemy is. So now we have a family with money, a grudge against us (due to us stripping everything from them) and extensive knowledge of the kingdom and possibly of our inner court (since the Regent belonged to their family) that fled either close or directly to our most powerful enemy. It's a bit dangerous to just let them be. We could have the Spymaster spy on them to see if they intend to do anything against us, I suppose, though even if they have no intention of doing that now it says nothing of the future.

If we infiltrate Umicilien, we could cause them to retaliate MUCH faster if our spymaster gets caught, especially if he is found out murdering people. AND, the Gilden family will know what he looks like if he is captured and unmasked. I think we should send him to Umicilien, but let's be careful what we have him actually do for us. Stealing information / magical things would be useful though.

As for the ants... I think if we can eventually access the dig site we could potentially win big from them in terms of the amount of magic "stuff" they seem to have. But I don't nkow if we can get it now. We'd need a bigger army for starters. I think we should focus on re-burying that dig site for now. We can always unearth it all again later when we're in a stronger position, but don't forget we also owe the Mercenary money.

Mm, in actuality we only have one purchase of money available, since we need two to pay back the loan.
Oh, and the "foreign relations" tab of the summary needs to be updated for Rhenovia, since all three facts about them are now false, since they've agreed to give back our land and are willing to sign a defence treaty without any further persuasion.
My game:
Hunters of Letrua; Character list
Also Player / Monster stats, skill lists.

My characters:
Tugs Tails, the goblin that was sort of a trapper and wears a bear's tail at his neck, for some reason - Lair of the Mountain King (Run by Thinks)
Alex Sparo, A city boy, poor of sight, who has learned to manipulate people and make the most of what he, and others, have - Trinity Isles (Run by Mort)
Mehriv Turajin, a Noble Dragonborn Sorcerer sent from his clan because he wasn't dragony enough. - The Wandering Archipelago (Run by Thinks)

I would be very wary about spending more gold at the moment because the Mercenary will come to collect pretty soon (I forget when, did we have 1 year or 2?) and we don't know if we might need the 1 gold urgently soon. Until we get rid of these ants, we've got no real way to earn more money unfortunately...

under events tab ---year 310, winter: 2 major purchases loan due to the Mercenary.
So we have a year and a half yet (returns in 6 more updates) and the magister can make three gold in one season if needed. He just doesn't like doing it.

What we need is info on where all the ants "mingle" so i say we get the magister to send his captive ants back in and we scry on them for information. Then next winter month when the ants (if like normal ants retreat to there hives with there summer stores of food. We send all the ants we have with poison/plague food and send in the troops to mop up after wards.

Oooh! I know!

Give spymaster mansion. While the soymaster is obtaining objects of value (and keeping half himself) from the gideon family he spyies on them. If any plan on attacking our kingdom, or anything devistatig to us, kill those who plan and/or agree on the attack/devistating action.

The "philanthropist" spymaster could very quickly end up with a household full of spy-kids which might benefit us fairly well, but I don't necessarily trust his motives enough to leave him in charge of young, malleable minds. We need loyal servants like the dragon-knight, not double-agents. I'm not very sure what to do with him, but sending him after the Gilden family could work.

Or, since we already have spies in Umicilien under the magister's control, we could send him to another neighbour for more info.

Spymaster- O.k one last job and then the mansion is yours for as long as you stay in MY kingdom. Investigate the Gilden Family that have fled and see if any are planning on betraying this realm further. If they are dispose of them so it doesn't draw attention to here then keep what ever wealth they might provide.
Also give some thought to your new persona and how that persona can help my realm.

Magister.- I want these ants dealt with before the next spring so can you scry out a place where they all congregate by using one of the captured one if we send it "home" then work on the plague poison against them.

The Dragonknight- Go and find as many entrances to the hive as possible. Try and see if there is any method to their deployment and weakness we can exploit

Squire - organize an event to keep the populace busy and train their newly found combat training, professional sparing. We can set up an official gambling ring to raise money.

Emissary- go teach at the school.

Marshall. - keep the walls defended.

Regent- keep training the local populace.

Artisan. - Winter is coming and we could do with more food so work on the farms.

Mercenary.- Not present

I Still think we should spend money to make money so use a coffer to build the docks.
