Old fashioned words!

Post by Synch » Wed Jul 08, 2015 3:18 am

Help!

A colleague at work always says an old-fashioned word, but hasn't lately. When I went to ask her why she hasn't been using it recently, I've promptly forgotten what word it is! She can't recall saying any weird word either. Now its really pissing me off that I can't remember, although when I see it I'm sure I will remember it.

Its a word that is synonymous with fiasco or rigmarole I think. It is a word like balderdash, poppycock, flim-flam, ballyhoo etc.

Wrack your brains!

kerfluffle
shindig
bust
debacle
botch
crackerjack

What sort of context was it used? Like... make a sentence and leave the spot blank where it would go. Might help us!

I'm trying to remember the exact context....

Something along the lines of: "lets make sure we document this so we don't have to go through the same ___________ again." So its a word similar to debacle, fiasco, ballyhoo etc, if I'm recalling correctly.

He said rigmarole in his first post, so probably not that.

Palaver's one I'd forgotten. I hope it's that... I'm running out of suggestions.

It wasn't any of those. I have a feeling it started with r, but not rigmarole.

You know, its probably one of those situations where I imagined it sounds like something or was used in a certain context but was actually completely different in actuality. Sorry I'm being vague. I'll know it when I see it!

Hm, a dictionary I use does define it in the same vine as all these other words. It seem to stand for nonsense / boloney / etc., with a additional nuance of "stupidity". With a similair word schmeggery wich means fool / dummy, but also absurdity / foolishness. Oh, the wonders of the languages. So colourfull, when in the field of swearing or calling out foolishness

Amphigory?

And Twaddle. Twaddle's a good word. Not as good as amphigory though.
