Questopia v2

Post by maidiance » Fri Sep 01, 2017 9:16 pm

Questopia
Inn-keeping at its finest! Welcome to my first game here

Through fortune, fate, or gumption, you've come into the inn-keeping business. Adventurers are plenty, but running an inn is no walk in the park! Luckily, you know a thing or two already, and have some decent advice to help you get started. Quests will be your main interaction - better quests mean better adventurers will come; which of course means more money for you and your inn. Beware, however, as brawls and thievery are easy ways to lose reputation, and can mean your inn will become decrepit.

Starting resources:
10 gold coins (1 gold coin is worth 10 silver coins, 1 silver coin is worth 10 copper coins.)
1 dinky inn (lvl 1 building, can hold 5 patrons overnight)
5 basic resources (player chosen)
1 free [Lvl 1] upgrade
Please have a spoiler in your post with your current resources (gold, materials, quests, etc.)

Resources:
Can be used to upgrade your inn in a variety of ways.
Stone, mostly good for increasing the number of rooms your inn holds.
Wood, useful for gambling tables, stables, and generally bring in more adventurers.
Hide, gives your inn more reputation.
Foodstuffs, upgrades food/drink. (Used to improve income)

Income: (Level)d6 + reputation = number of silver coins at Tick.

Upgrades: An inn levels up by spending gold equal to the next level times five. A level 2 inn would thus require 10 gold, but it is *highly* recommended to use your starting gold on quests instead of upgrading right away.
[Requirement] Name: Description
[Lvl 1] Resourceful: You know a friend of a friend of a friend and get discounts; +1 resource every Tick.
[Lvl 1] Secure: Through placement or force of personality, your inn is more secure; 25% less brawls happen here.
[Lvl 2] Boisterous: Maybe it's the music, but more patrons seem to visit; +1 bonus patron every Tick.
[Lvl 2] Notorious: Well known by adventurers, you attract more quest-takers; +25% extra chance for a quest to be taken.
[Lvl 3] Locked and barred: Now you're safe from thieves; no more thieves for your inn, ever!
[Lvl 3] Renown: Reputation of your inn has spread far and wide; income is increased by 150%!
More to come!

To stake your claim and start, all you have to do is:
1) Pick a name for your inn. Something short and nice like Never Empty Mug.
2) Choose your 5 resources. Choose an upgrade for your inn.
3) Post quests for adventurers. Remember that you'll probably need to part with some of your gold for the reward, but quests are a great way to draw in adventurers. A building can only have as many quests as its level plus one, so your starting inn can have two quests up at a time. Each quest should be formatted as such: [Reward] Requirements (short description/additions optional)

Example quest:
[5 silver] Slay a beast and return with its hide (Wouldn't a less drafty inn be a better inn; help out your local Never Empty Mug today!)

Good luck and I hope you have fun
And feel free to ask questions before you sign up, or direct suggestions to me here.

Interesting, interesting. Are gold coin the only currency, or do they break down into other denominations? Getting an idea of the value will be rather important in deciding what quest rewards should be.

Sounds intriguing. :) Oh, and welcome to the forums (as non-lurker). :cheer:

Got some questions:
So... does each player run an inn or do all the players run/vote on one inn altogether?
Is there any PvP to be expected?
What kind of quests can we offer? I mean we know nothing about the world yet, there's no point in offering 1.000.000 gold (if we ever get that much) to kill a dragon, if there are no dragons in the world... And offering 1 gold reward for a quest taker to bring 100 of each resource is probably not going to get anyone wanting to take it, either...(unless 1 gold is a lot more valuable than I would expect)
Perhaps you could make an example quest?
How does the inn get more money, or rather: are there other ways than selling food & beverages and renting rooms to adventurers?
How does the inn level up?
How many players will you take?
How long is a "tick"?
What do upgrades usually cost (I know you get one for free, but this might be worth while knowing when planning which resources to pick and which upgrade ;) )

Gold coins definitely break down into silver and copper; 1 gold coin is worth 10 silver coins, 1 silver coin is worth 10 copper coins.

Thanks, Gathers!
Hopefully some answers:
It hadn't occurred to me previously that players might be interested in running an inn collaboratively. I might have it be an option; that way no player is stuck if they wish to make their own choices.
I do not currently plan for PVP to be an option.
Ah, well, the idea is you learn about the world through your patrons. To give you a baseline, it is a fantasy world (hence the adventurers) and they do like to make extra coin (generally speaking). Of course, you'll overhear them say things such as "A bounty for a dragon? Seems rather high," and know for next time to aim lower, or perhaps instead "Looks like the place is lacking in... everything. A shame," and more or less walk away from the 100-resource quest.
Good idea, I'll put one up on the OP; thanks!
Currently, there aren't any other methods of gaining income. Let me know if you have suggestions, I'm pretty open to those :)
An inn levels up by spending gold equal to the next level times five. A level 2 inn would thus require 10 gold, but it is *highly* recommended to use your starting gold on quests instead of upgrading right away.
I haven't considered capping the number of players yet. I don't know this forum nearly well enough. Is there a concern of having too many? Too few?
Same problem as before, I'm afraid. I'm currently considering to have a Tick be three days; perhaps [Mon-Wed] [Thu-Sat], leaving Sunday out of the Tick rotation.
Upgrades are chosen at level-up. At level 2 you get one, and at level 3 you get one, so on and so forth. (This mechanic is meant to have players' inns be a little more 'individual'.)

Right so somehow the whole income part of this doesn't seem all that clear to me...
I put out quests to get X for Y...
N adventurers come and spend money Z
They go off...
They come back and get Y...

But I don't see the rules for how N or Z is determined...
Really...why are you reading this?

Oh, right, sorry!
Level of inn is the number of d6 you roll for income when Tick happens, modified by reputation (negative reputation subtracts from income, positive reputation increases it; the formula would therefore be (Level)d6 + reputation = number of silver coins at Tick. The number of adventurers isn't actually something that affects that mechanic, they're more for the quest and lore of Questopia.

Ah, so a "tick" is an update or turn of the game. Thanks.

You say stone is for increasing the number of rooms. Is there a fixed number of stones you have to spend on a room and can do that as long as/whenever you have stones available, or will there be a) an increase in price and/or b) a limit to the total number of rooms you can have?

Same with wood/gaming tables, hides/reputation, food (does better food give more income? Also, do you buy/use high quality food once to upgrade it permanently one level or will you have keep on buying it, as the patrons eat it)?

I can think of a lot of other ways to generate income for the inn. e.g. if you say gaming tables, I think a certain percentage of the wins should go to the bank (=inn in this case), as it does in most casinos. Or you can offer potions and healing services (or resurrection/burial services for lost comrades of the adventurers). Or you can raid e.g. orc camps or other inns (that last item would be PvP, though, something which I don't like - which is why I asked if there are such planned in the game, so I can decide if it is for me or not). You could also rent parts of your inn to people who sell stuff to adventurers (e.g. armourer, alchemist, weapon smith, camping equipment salesman, ...), or offer those services yourself (if you find suitable employees for that).
You could offer something that is possibly deadly on the menu (e.g. blowfish), and people will still come and eat it, wanting the thrill or to be able to boast about it, if they survived. With some of them you will make money from the dish, with others from everything they had on them. 8)

I'm assuming building a spy network offering information, assassinations, fencing goods, mercenaries, ... (all PvE) is all possible, and will be handled via quests, but those also can be sources of income.

I could probably think of many more things, but for now I'm tired, so I'll leave it.

My current idea is that resource/buildables is either 2 to 1 or 3 to 1. So you'd spend 2 hides for 1 reputation, for example. For food, you'd be upgrading your food-level (giving you more income). (No keeping track of patrons eating food, thanks very much haha.)

Wow, I'm blown away at all the suggestions, thanks so much for typing them up! I'm definitely uncertain on how I would handle all that; I don't think they would do well with being simplified into one mechanic, that would take away from the weight of choice. On the other hand, having too many options can be disastrous to keep track of, if nothing else.

So, building level and reputation are the key features in earning income, how do the other resources and their products influence things? Same as reputation?

Does the food/drink resource fluctuate naturally? Like, over one tick the resource will drop by 1?

Seems interesting! I'll probably jump in once we're starting this off.

As for food/drink- While I'm not sure of the actual intent, I could see two possibilities, each with their own merit... The first is that they're required to effectively run your inn, but that it isn't too big a hassle to have adventurers get you some to keep running it... Perhaps a bit more fitting would be to say that food and drink resources are "special", and that selling them would give you increased profits for that turn- Whereas not having any would mean that your regular profits are you selling only regular beer/potato stew or something along those lines.

The other products are more geared towards drawing in adventurers to your inn. While I don't have a hard-and-fast mechanic for that, the idea is that you'll overhear more snippets of conversation, which then gives you more insight into what you might want to do next.

Food/drink-wise... Originally I did think about subtracting from them every Tick to show that they're being consumed. Of course, that would mean you would constantly need more foodstuffs, which I'm not so sure about. M0rtimer's idea of 'extra' foodstuffs giving extra income makes the most sense, so thank you very much for that idea (b ^-^)b

Alright, let's give this a shot.

Name: The Flowing Flagon
Resources: 10 Gold, 2 Hide, 3 Stone.
Upgrades: [Level 1] Resourceful.
Quests:
  • [5 silver] Hunt a wild boar: Fresh boar meat would really improve the meals we can serve, go and get some for us! (Repeatable: I'll put up the same quest so long as I have less than 3 Food/Drink available.)
  • [3 silver] Keep the Peace: Mischief makers are trashing the neighbourhood and scaring away customers! Go and teach them a lesson.

Les' go

Name: Dragon's head inn
Resources: 10 gold, 2 furs, 1 wood, 2 stone
Lvl 1 upgrade: Resourceful
Quests: [5 silver] We need some meat for the spit- Any decent wild hunt animal will do!
[1 gold] Our inn is currently very much misnamed - Help me solve it by getting me the head of a draconid for above the fireplace!

(I'm not sure yet what kind of "dragons" exist in this world, but I figure there's some lesser draconids that wouldn't be too difficult for an adventurer... Long term goal is to get an actual dragon of course, but that'll probably cost a bit more. :P (And if it's way too little for a lesser draconid too, I'm sure I'll hear of it... :paranoia: )

Also that does raise a question: "get us wood" doesn't really sound adventurery, but that's how we're supposed to get those resources too, right..? Or can we get creative and say "Go slay 3 marble golems and bring me their marble" for stone? :P)

[quote="Thinks"]Alright, let's give this a shot.

Name: The Stagger Inn
Resources: 10 Gold, 3 Wood, 2 Hide.
Upgrades: [Level 1] Resourceful.
Quests:
  • [1 Gold]: Trouble at the Quarry: Goblins have been harassing the workers at the local quarry. Get rid of them, and get our supply lines open again!
  • 5 silver: The local elvish settlement makes a particularly good summer wine, but they refuse to trade. 5 silver to anyone who can bring me a barrel (by any means)
((I'm going for a dive bar style. Probably not the sort of place you'd want to bring your kids; definitely the sort of place where people will pass out drunk in the stables if they can't get a room or go home)).

Indeed, getting resources can be done with creative quests. The creatures/monsters of the world are only known to you in the vaguest sense; if you were to put up the marble golem quest, you'd hear more about either "Do those even exist?" or perhaps "Three? What a laugh, I could do that in my sleep!" as various adventurers boast and gossip.

Usually, a recruitment thread is left here and people make a new thread for the game in the game forum. Sometimes the recruitment thread gets changed in purpose, though and becomes an OOC thread, instead, in which case it usually gets moved.
Just say what you want and I'm sure a mod will try and get it done eventually.

Since you said you didn't want to limit entries:

Name: Pit of Despair
Resources: 10 gold, 2 hides, 1 wood, 2 stone
Lvl 1 upgrade: Resourceful
Quests:
[5 silver - may be adjusted according to the amount wood brought back; more wood, more money] We need some wood for upgrading the inn. Either go and do some lumbering or kill a few ents and bring back the wood.
[2 Silver] We need a pit to hold pit fights in for fighting, betting and holding tournaments, grab a shovel and start digging one in front of the inn. Any structural damage you cause to the inn itself will be deducted from the reward (can go negative!) so be mindful WHERE you start burrowing.

btw, that 1 resource per tick, is that random or does the innkeeper get to pick which one they receive?

So... the income is NOT dependant on the # of patrons actually staying at the inn, only on the inn level (and reputation)? *scratches head* Why on earth would anyone build more rooms, then or even go for the Boisterous upgrade?

Upgrade your inn
Trade with players/npcs (or attempt to, haha)

You have to actually spend the resources. So say you had four stones; I wouldn't actually take them to make rooms unless you specifically spent them, saying something like "I'll spend two stone on building a room."
