Aajej
The steward pushes the tray into your hands before taking the money. ÔÇ£Enjoy the views from the deck.ÔÇØ He says before taking the silver and then dealing with his other guests. Apparently the small pot contains at least two more, if not three more, cups of the hot beverage.
► Show Spoiler
Arg and Speaks
The steward blinks at Arg for a moment and then turns to Speaks. Thank you he flips a three copper piece over to him and pockets the silver. I have a nice bottle of sherry, several of rice wine, a few of elderberry wine, and a bottle of rye whiskey from somewhere that has been gathering dust. Which do you think he would like?
The steward flips a few pages with his hand and looks at Speaks quizzically. But says only ÔÇ£Did you read this before signing it?ÔÇØ
Makita
Valdar listens and scowls, obviously not at Makita but at something. So you are working at the Opera out on the island eh? Well best you come with me and I introduce you to her. Need to frame things the right way, since Ill likely be back in Town this evening. Not sure when shed really need ya, but He leans forward, Hell if there is someone who can help find where that bullet should go it would be her.
He then shifts a little and looks after the elf leaving. Also, you forgot those damn Orcs got hunting rights in Estaria for all of their warmongering. Now the place is crawling with themnot to mention the western fortresses are still in their control. He looks up at Makita, Which is why Ive got my own score to settle with that bunch.
Jager
The woman seems to have lost interest once the elf paid up and now finally moves away from him. However he does get a serious side glance from the steward for some reason.
Really...why are you reading this?

"The rye. Please.", Arg rasps out the drink request. He assumes that the bottle will be placed on his employer's tab, but if the steward indicates he wants payment up front, Arg will dig in his belt pouch for the required coin before returning to the table with the dusty bottle.

Simoom decides that the safest place in the cabin is darting back to hiding behind his mistresses feet. From behind the small space between the hem of her skirt and the cabin floor, a pair of small, brown eyes continues to keep a close watch on Dra'kan.

With a polite nod, Aajej accepts the tray and would continue on her way up to the deck, except...she attempts to organize her thoughts into something her companion will be able to understand Simoom, reproach.

The fox doesn't move.

<Really, Simoom, it's your own fault for investigating the weird snakish monstrosity in the first place>, she thinks <Speaking of, what in the many names of all the great heros is that thing?!> (See if she can identify Dra'kan as anything 1d20+7=21, Does he seem dangerous? 1d20+0=8) <That likely explains the screaming earlier.>

Aajej waits, when her companion still doesn't show any signs of wanting to come out from behind her, she thinks <At least it wasn't under my skirt; accidentally stepping on him does not seem like an act he would forgive easily.> Glancing around the cabin, she notes her position, Dra'kan's position, the base of the ladder, and any obstacles she'll have to go around in order to get to the base of the ladder while skirting as far as conveniently possible around the flying snake. <If I take off quickly, he may run off for the next piece of cover, but, perhaps if I step slowly, I may be able to get him to keep following>. Keeping an eye on Simoom, Aajej starts off on a slow course towards the ladder 1d20+6+4=16.

[OOC: Aajej finds it easier to think (and speak) in her native Elven (unless there's any problem with this, of course.) (Common is probably a close second though, she's just a little faster with Elven, and she happens to prefers it).

Makita leans forward, wanting to speak quietly before Arg returns with the drinks. He has a quick glance over his shoulder at the orc at the bar.

"So if you're hunting orcs, why are you travelling with one? For all you know, he could be some spy or assassin for Urgnach. Especially if he's got no tribal ties. How do you know you can trust him? And I can ask this of you from experience, look where my lack of caution got me."

...which made Jäger's gaze settle back on the steward. He was careful not to stare; after a moment, he settled for watching the man out of the corner of his eyes (14) while he checked his drink to see if it had yet crossed the temperature threshold between molten iron and drinkable.

The Elf, The Orc, and the Goblin
ÔÇ£Madam, please allow my associate to help you up onto deck with your tray so you can deal with your small friend thereÔÇØ states the merchant from his spot watching the entire room.

ÔÇ£Arg, please help the lady with her tray so she can get up onto the deckÔÇØ he orders Arg when (if) the Orc looks back at him. ÔÇ£I doubt the steward will have little problem supplying us with the bottle.ÔÇØ His hand indicating that heÔÇÖs sitting right next to the narrow bar. The steward nods to Arg and says, ÔÇ£I will drop the bottle off at your table in a moment.ÔÇØ

Aajej might find it intrusive, but the offered help is likely useful. It is a good ten feet from the narrow steps that lead out to the ships main deck. The deck to the ladder is empty except for a few short stands bolted to the floor. The steps of the ladder are angled so a four legged creature like Simoom can climb out onto the deck, but they also offer a wonderful hiding opportunity. The kurwaÔÇÖuuvanimo <crafted monster> likely smells funny to poor Simoom and really has no natural sound at all.
► Show Spoiler
The steward steps out of ArgÔÇÖs way and then is moving towards the bar again. He seems to be unnaturally flexible and canny about it all, putting his feet where they step in no-one elses way and not on any tails of talking, flying snakes either. As he moves that way he states to Speaks, ÔÇ£Perhaps not, but you do realize that this contract has an Ascendathlon clause? Not a bad one for most performers but I doubt someone who can fly would get so little.ÔÇØ

The boat deck seems to sway slightly as the ferry changes course. The view framed by the stern window changes from a canal scene with ships lined up along both sides to that of the low fort that guards both the New Lighthouse as well as the Inner Harbor. One looking out can make out the warships lying at anchor under the fortress's protection while a vast number of trading ships lie in the Outer Harbor either tied to one of the docks or letting small boats carry goods out to them from the shore.

Jager
The steward is either very, very good or is using the runes in some manner to help himself maneuver around the room. Which right now seems a very expensive way to have good service, but then again who knows what kind of advantage it would offer if a brawl broke out.

Then you finally look at the cup of tea you were poured by the goblin. And realize that he poured you a full cup of the local tea which is brewed so strong it makes the coffee look weak. In general, the locals brew tea dark and then dilute it with fresh hot water out of an urn or a second pot. And it follows since that what you have, a top pot with tea sitting on a larger water pot. Obviously the goblin has not done much tea drinking locally or thought you drank it beyond dark.
► Show Spoiler
Makita
ValÔÇÖdar sends Arg off to help some lady up onto the deck. He then focuses again on you. ÔÇ£You spent too much time having your knob polished by all those lithe ladies in the camp [I donÔÇÖt have to explain this do I?] rather than go to boring owl [roll for memory] lectures eh?ÔÇØ

He leans back for a moment and shakes his head.
 The peace has screwed with Brosnar [Note below] and his League of Tribes in one wonderful way, his attempt to bring in all that tribal refuse of Orcs and half-orcs back into the fold has hit the normal obstinate wall of Orc traditionalists. The tribal chiefs will only allow half-orcs to be servants in the League, and the full Orcs who were thrown out of a tribe, at least those who didnt join that Immortals Cohort before the end of the war, are now stuck with the League wanting them just as dead as their various tribes did before the League. Now Urgnach was given command of those Immortals and hes expanded it. But Orc membership is still restricted. And my companion doesnt have any of the sigils on himself that indicates he is an Immortal. This says I can trust him because hed never be able to get back to see Urgnach even if he was going to report me. Also the boy is working to get enough money to head back to the Empire, not trying to keep hanging around me Valdar then leans forward and whispers, Also by working with an Orc I of hide from Urgnachs attention. After all, how can his sworn enemies ever work with an Orc? He spreads his hands out and gets and evil grin on his face.

Right then the steward plops a dusty bottle of some light brown liquid down on the table. ValÔÇÖdar seems to eye it suspiciously, and even more so when the price of twenty five marks is announced.

Common Knowledge ÔÇô Everyone Knows This

Brosnar ÔÇ£The UniterÔÇØ is sort of the most famous Orc currently alive. Primarily, because he seems to have united many of the Orc Tribes in the North East Lands of the Ood and the Zood to work together. What was a typical little skirmish between the elves of the Northern Kingdoms and some expansionist Orc Tribes turned into a full wage war between BrosnarÔÇÖs new League of Tribes one side and the Empire and Northern Elven Kingdoms on the other.

Depending on your point of view, either the Elves and Empire won or the Orcs won.

Code: Select all

Because I hate writing silver and gold they will be interchangeable from now on with
Copper = Pence
Silver = Marks
Crowns = Gold
Stems=1,000 Gold
Note you can use Gold, silver, and copper still I just wanted to use something else.

Owl lectures memory check: 1D20 = [6] = 6

Makita nods, scratching his temple. "Ah of course. Apologies, had a late night."
He stares out the window as the scenery crawls by, seabirds winging their way through the sky while the fortress throws shadows across the sails of the warships. What a fool I was, thinking I could outrun war. Death is a diligent taskmaster, and I'm clearly stuck in its employ.

"Wait, you can't mean you want me to go after Brosnar and his council, can you? I've been out of the game too long, Val'dar."

Arg nods at his employer before turning to the tiny elf lady.
"Arg."
He remembers that when introducing himself, some mistake him for merely grunting.
"Er... Arg'ak Kro. My name."

He holds out a massive scarred and callused hand, palm up to receive the tray if she hands it to him and tries to smile in as least threatening a manner as possible for an orc three times her size.

The tea... Well, he could certainly weather a sip or two, and refill the cup he supposed. Even diluted, Jäger had never understood the point to steeping tea so...long. It made the tea stronger, yes, but it also brought out the tea's natural tannins far more than he liked, and made it horribly bitter. In the least, the next cup would be a bit more pleasant.

The small pots here must have much thinner walls than she had imagined from looking at it. Aajej made a mental note to look into it as soon as she was safely away from both the orc and the kurwa. She really didn't relish the idea of letting the orc put his hands all over something she'd been intending to drink. She relished the idea of owing an orc a favor even less, even though, with luck, they would all get off the boat and head their separate ways. Aajej, however, had never trusted luck. She ignores Arg's offer and, careful to try to make sure she keeps the tray level, takes her chances with the ladder.

Simoom doesn't seem to mind Arg's approach as much as Dra'kan; now there's a nice, big, orc and his mistress between himself and the strange creature. He continues to keep his attention mostly on Drak'an, but glances occasionally up at Arg just in case.

Arg has grown accustomed to being mistrusted and looked down on by those who think themselves his betters, but it doesn't mean he enjoys it any more than he did the first time he was pelted with rocks and dung as a young orc. And while Mr. Val employed him for his ability to cow others into submission with a snarl and a glare, that likely wasn't what he wished here. He shrugs as the uppity little gakish turns her back and heads for the steps. He'll stand ready to catch her if she topples.

Arg and Aajej with Friends

Arg gets to watch Aajej slowly move up the stairs with quite a good deal of grace. It is fairly obvious she has at least a decent sense of balance. She catches her feet a few times due to the odd angle of the ladder. She arrives on deck with her tray in her hands and Simoom underfoot.
On deck she can see a large expanse of water with the mass of a large island some distant. Behind her is the dwarf, smoking a pipe on the quarter deck. He keeps his eyes out ahead, glancing at the man holding the tiller in place.

Jager

The city becomes smaller through the stern windows as time passes. The tea becomes colder as time goes along.

Valdar chuckles, If I want him dead I need to raise an army. He leans back, No I need someone to

Of course it is really just a huge campaign to get themselves elected to the Star Court, or even possibly to become the Sworder thats the heir to the leader in these parts
Valdar turns at the mention of the Ascednathlon. What are you going on about

The steward is taken aback obviously, ÔÇ£Sir I was just telling this fellow and his companion about the Ascendathlon.ÔÇØ

ValÔÇÖdar gives him a hard stare and then waves for Arg. ÔÇ£Why exactly are you bringing that up with a goblin?ÔÇØ

The steward locks eyes with Valdar. That Sir, is between usI would strongly suggest you act politely sir or I will be forced to invalidate your ticket and escort you off the boat immediately...and your hired thug indicating Arg.

Mindful on needing to keep up appearances as a showman and trickshooter, Makita busies himself with some card flourishes and simple sleight of hand tricks as he waits while Val'dar is scolded by the steward. A steward who seems uncannily flexible and sure of himself. Something to note.

Now the conflict was beginning to draw Jäger's attention. He turned slightly in his seat to keep better track of the steward and other guests; another sip was taken of the now diluted tea to (hopefully) avoid drawing suspicion. His eyes narrowed behind the tinted lenses of his glasses as he focused on the steward and passengers.

Choosing to detect evil, now.
(Assuming they are all within 60 feet, of course, and that the seats between us somehow don't amount to more than 3 solid feet of wood.)

Aajej glances around the deck to reorient herself, then takes herself, Simoom (he still seems content to follow her), and the tray over to a spot where she isn't likely to be in the way of any of the crewmembers. As there are several people around the tiller, she will wait for one of them to identify himself before continuing.

Away from strange flying snakes, Simoom relaxes slightly and looks around for anything interesting on deck.

OOC: Will all evil players please raise their hand? (I donÔÇÖt have access you your spreadsheets at the moment)

The Education of Speaks

"But what does the clause mean and why did you comment on my low pay rate?"

Speaks question breaks the mental conflict between the two men. They both turn an look at the goblin.

ÔÇ£He has a contract with clause related to Ascendathlon? Eh? A goblin with a flying monster mount?ÔÇØ ValÔÇÖdar asks.

ÔÇ£Yes, and the base rate remains that of a barker, room board and four gold a day plus tips.ÔÇØ The steward answers.

Worth a hell of a lot more than that Valdar states his eyes narrowing on the goblin.

Which is what we were discussing before you interrupted. The steward turns his attention back to the goblin. You see, based on this contract if an Acendathlon were to be declared, your employer could essentially rent you out to one of the Houses and make them fight or race for themlegally, or even sell your contract. However the more I look at this page, the more it looks to be a slap plateerprinting jargon for a premade printing plate. As though the printer included it per rote into the contract.

Valdar "Sorry about that, we merchants tend to get a might paranoid about that word" states to apparently no one before returning his attention to the bottle now on the table and Makita, Hmph, sorry a bit on edgean Acedathlon rumor can cause quite the chaos in the markets. And quite the opportunity for someone like yourself." He pours three glasses of high quality whiskey out and states a toast.
ÔÇ£To old comrades, may they be enjoying the pleasures of the Fields of Athope with a smile in their heart and a twinkle in their eyes.ÔÇØ
He nods to Arg, ÔÇ£Take a sip man, wash that uppity elf out of your system.ÔÇØ

Jager

The sensation is weird, and bright. Your magic has gone slightly haywire, apparently because instead of seeing who is evil within the room, you are seeing swirls of color around everyone. Instinct says that your own natural ability has been augmented somehow, but it will take a moment to figure out what color swirl represents evil if any. (You should know if anyone is evil I just don't have it available at the moment besides Val'dar and the Steward who are not evil.)

Up on Deck

As Aajej attempts to put down the tray the sound of someone calling out to is obvious. The dwarf standing on the quarterdeck is waving you over and calls out,
ÔÇ£Tiri Amrun Yalema, caresso a'cair ÔÇ£ <Bright Morning Traveler, welcome to my vessel.> in the semi-standard trade elvish promoted by the Northern Elven Kingdom and adopted by most sea trading elves.*
His waving indicates that you and your pot should take a seat next to him on the quarterdeck.

Simoom is now surrounded by smells. The distant smells of the world he can sense on the breeze. There are nearby smells of wet things, fishy things, smoking things, possibly meaty things. And sounds too: sounds of things creaking, someone playing a flute, and possibly the squeak of something small, furry, and edible.
A small world of things to explore.

*Considered a standard dialect of elvish

All
Fields of Athope is essentially a part of the universes' concept of heaven, but quite a bit more...athletic in nature...

Arg approaches the table and reaches down, his large callused hands wrapping gently around the dainty seeming glass. He raises it silently with the others in their toast, before tipping a third of it into his mouth, the protruding tusks of his lower jaw making sipping difficult to do without losing half the beverage. The one eyed fellow seems to be trusted by Mr. Val, though Arg keeps a watchful eye on the steward and the tiny goblin and it's... thing. Before reaching the city as a young orc with his father, they'd killed and eaten many serpents in the wild. The trick was to grab it right behind the head and squeeze... this one is a bit bigger, more colorful and has wings, but Arg too is bigger than the last time he'd eaten snake. Glancing around the cabin, he notices the tall guy giving him an odd look...
