After wishing the guards well, Kytiel will head in the general direction of the Carmichael place, so as not to make them wonder why he's heading out and about at this hour. Once well out of view of them, he'll divert his path towards the gate out of the Top Quarter.

Uragh considers for a moment, frowning... Then raises his scarred eyebrow.

"Well, if you're' worried bout him catching us... It's just one guy, yeah? Could grab him, get all the info we can out of him, then off him... There's plenty of evidence to make the ones responsible think it's the sewer kobolds getting revenge, isn't it..? I mean... You'd probably be here even if you weren't in on the whole ploy."

"You... wanna throw the kobolds under the carriage?" Veska asks, tilting her head incredulously. "Am I hearin' that right?"

"No. Hell no."

"We sneak out without 'im knowin' we was here. And if he sees us, we... I dunno... deal with 'im and make it look like an accident,"
she accedes, reluctantly. "Now ya want I should put these keys back?"

Uragh shakes his head. "That's not at all what I'm saying. At least... It's not what I'm trying to do. Let me just break down the facts for you of what they're thinking right now. They release monsters in the bank. Monsters kill kobolds. Kobolds kill the monster. Now imagine that-"

Uragh starts... Interrupted as the door swings shut again. He stands there puzzled for a moment... Then presses the button as the door swings open again.

"As I was saying... Imagine that the kobolds climbed up the rope, figured the guy they found on top was responsible, and killed him?"

"The only difference is that they took down the one they figured responsible. If you're worried that they're gonna be thrown under the bus... A bit late for that, yea? You don't think they won't figure out that the Maw is dead, and who else are they gonna blame?"

"There's also the matter that this guy might have actual info we can use, yeah..? We planning to just let him walk..?"

"I dunno what the bank folk're gonna do 'bout their pet monsters, assumin' they find out," Veska admits, "but this ain't about them. This is about what the guards'll do."

"Now I dunno if you noticed, but kobolds ain't exactly proper citizens. City treats us like pests. If the guards wanted, they could come stompin' down the sewers and start wipin' us all out, and no one'd bat an eye,"
Veska hisses in contempt. "But they don't, 'cause we're convenient. We keep the sewers runnin', so the city ain't gotta pay no one to do it. In return, we get the privilege o' livin' beneath the city folk, cleanin' up their crap."

"So if the guards hear we're killin' sewer monsters, if they even know there's sewer monsters at all, then we's just doin' our jobs. Now they don't have to do it. But the guards ain't lettin' kobolds get away with murder, 'specially not on someone up here in the rich district. They'd hunt down a whole pack and send their heads to the rest o' the packs as an example. At least, maybe worse."

"So no. I ain't pinnin' a murder on no kobolds."

"If ya wanna off 'im, it's gonna look like an accident. Make it look like he slipped into the pit or somethin', I dunno. Or we could just get 'im to talk tomorrow, when we ain't beat to Hell. I bet that schmoozer guy'd love havin' someone to chat with."

Uragh doesn't seem to have any different expression as Veska does her story... Uragh only silent for a second by the time she finishes, and then sighing.

"Fine, guess you make a point. We'll come back for him, make it look like a break-in."

"...Assuming we manage to sneak out without getting caught."

"Awright then. Take these and lock up that gate when ya grab yer rope," Veska says, handing Uragh the stolen key ring. "Just cut it off at the top and burn the last bit. Anythin' left'll fall down the hole once the spell's done."

"I'll poke around up here an' find us a way out."

With that said, Veska will check out the other room's exit, the one with the ramp leading up to a hatch. Again, she'll listen next to it before trying to open it, making sure the store owner isn't behind it.

Perception to listen next to meat room ramp hatch: 1D20+3 = [4]+3 = 7
Stealth while trying to open meat room ramp hatch: 1D20+7 = [19]+7 = 26

"We wanna keep the keys? It's gonna be suspicious if they're gone." Uragh says, although already backing up to go lock the gate, and reclaim (almost all of) the rope.

"...Almost wish I had brought a piece of soft clay to make copies with though. Maybe we can find some soap or wax- That won't be too suspicious if it disappears. Probably don't have the time however."

"Let's wait for a moment and see what happens..." Uragh whispers back. He was pretty stealthy, but he didn't figure they should take unnecessary risks if it could be helped. Hopefully the drunken baffoon with them that was too drunk to actually weigh in on the conversation wouldn't stumble over something...

Veska, Uragh, and Vatro

After a lot of whispered bickering, Veska moves to check out the ramp exit. She listens for movement, hearing nothing but silence. However when she goes to open it, she feels resistance as it refuses to budge. Something on the other side is keeping it shut.

Meanwhile, Vatro hears the creak of floorboards directly above, and the faint sound of running water.

Kytiel

"A robbery? Well, I do be glad to hear that your Chief is on top of things. The offer of an escort is appreciated, but I'd not want to be takin' you from more important duties, I'm sure I'll be alright."

"A good and uneventful evenin' to you."

"And you, sir."

The guards give you a nod, then resume their patrol. After slipping out of their sight, you continue your path towards the Safehouse. The sentries at the gate give you a curious look, but wave you through without trouble when they see the Carmichael crest.

Eventually you find your way back to the safety of Barkin's Corner, discovering Jax passed out on the couch inside.

With a huff, Veska heads back to the cellar door and repeats the process there, listening at the door before unlocking it, going through the door, then locking it behind her again. She'll keep the keys on her for now, so the owner doesn't pop down into the cellar for any reason until she's scoped the place out.

Veska will keep an eye out for any windows or other potential exits, working her way to where she thinks the other end of that ramp in the cellar leads. That might be a discrete way for Uragh and Vatro to get up out of the cellar, if she can unblock the other side.

She'll be careful to use any darkness she finds along the way, hiding in plain sight, invisibly.

((Do you want another Stealth check, or can I use the previous one?))

Uragh collects his rope, closes the gate with the key, before looking to rejoin with Veska...

((I'd have switched faces, perhaps a few times, before making it back to the safe house. Don't need someone wondering why a Carmichael servant is going into the house at that time of night.))

Kytiel chuckles at Jax passed out and turns in to get a night's rest himself.

Veska, Uragh, and Vatro

After Uragh has gone back to retrieve the rope and lock the gate, Veska sneaks upstairs again.

Well, "sneaks" is a bit of an overstatement. Creeping past the stairs in the hallway, she finds herself in a kitchen/storeroom of some kind. One side of the room has large metal sinks and washing racks, while the other holds shelves cluttered with boxes and crates. On the wall opposite her there's another door and a window, both seemingly locked and bolted. Judging by the rough size of the cellar, it looks like the meat hatch opens up out the back of the building?

However, as Veska creeps towards the window to get a better look, her tail accidentally bumps into one of the shelves. Which dislodges the precarious stack of boxes atop it, sending them clattering down to the floor. Loudly.

"Wut in the blazes..."

Spinning around, Veska realises that the owner was a lot closer than she thought. Feet begin stomping on the stairs behind her, as he descends to investigate the noise.

Meanwhile, Uragh and Vatro are chilling in the locked cellar when they suddenly hear a lot of banging coming from directly above them.

Uragh let's out a silent sigh, preparing his scimitars and waiting besides the doors... Otherwise being silent, and continuing to listen for what happens next.

"Try to be heroes and knock the kobold out and leave with her and claim ourselves as good guys? Or just go out when she has caused enough havok as a distraction?"

Vatro will however join Uragh on the opposite side of the door in case someone needs a good ass whooping.

Quickly, Veska picks an upper shelf to clamber up onto, trying to nestle herself in with the various goods there and out of sight! Maybe out of the light, as well?

Uragh and Vatro

Hearing the crashing above, you both take up position at the top of the stairs, waiting for a signal to bust in...

Veska

With no time to do anything else, Veska hides! Scampering around the back of a shelf, she clambers up and wedges herself behind a box on the top of it.

Moments later, the owner steps into the room. He's a squat dwarven figure, with a plaited ruddy brown beard and, from this angle, a glaring bald spot on top of his skull. He looks down at the boxes with hands on his hips, then glances around the room....eyes skimming right over Veska's hiding place.

"Blasted things..."

Muttering a few curses, the dwarf kneels down and starts stacking the boxes back up on the shelf. It takes him a while, as he makes sure they're stacked carefully this time. But eventually he finishes, dusting off his hands and stomping back upstairs.

Veska lets out a held breath. Maybe, just maybe, she won't have to commit a murder today. Tomorrow, perhaps, depending on how culpable this guy is with regards to the sewer monsters.

She carefully lifts herself out of the shelf miscellany and lowers herself back down to the ground. She peers out of the window there to see if there's anybody around. If the coast looks clear, she'll let herself out the back door and see if she can get that hatch to the cellar open.

Veska

With the dwarf out of the way (for now), Veska checks the back window. It seems to lead out into another street, but this one looks pretty deserted from what she can see. Maybe it's only used for deliveries?

Unlocking the door, she slips outside. The hatch is there, as predicted - locked shut by a padlocked wooden bar. After a few false tries, she finds the right key, and heaves the hatch open...

Uragh and Vatro

You both hear some shuffling behind the door, and the sound of footsteps. No banging or shouting. Then there's a soft creak, and light spills into the cellar from that hatch on the far wall.

"Hey it's me!" Veska says, poking her head down into the hatch. "Coast is clear, you guys get goin'. I'mma put these keys back."

With that, Veska locks the hatch after Uragh and Vatro make it out, before sneaking back into the meat shop. She skulks back to the main entrance, intending to hang the key ring back where she found them. She makes sure the owner's upstairs before she potentially causes another ruckus....

Stealth and Perception (Hunters Mark ADV) to put keys back:
1D20+7 = [5]+7 = 12
2D20.HIGH(1)+3 = [18, 16]+3 = 21

If it seems like she's been noticed, she'll make a quick escape out the back door! If the owner doesn't seem to notice anything, she'll instead take a minute to lock the door behind her. Then she'll make her way out of the rich district with the others!

Dexterity (Picking Locks) to lock back door of meat shop: 1D20+7 = [17]+7 = 24

Uragh just silently nods, the less noise they make the better- Back out! He starts looking around for the best way to get out of this street, though.

...While he's at it, he's thinking if he knows of any ways to sneak out of the rich district- He might raise a couple eyebrows just trying to exit by the gates...

Veska, Uragh, and Vatro

Uragh and Vatro clamber out the hatch, scanning the street...and quickly realising they have no idea where they are. Hopefully Veska will? Fortunately, this seems like a quiet backstreet, with plenty of alleyways leading out to the main roads. As long as they don't hang around too long, they should be fine.

Uragh also tries to think of ways out of the Upper District, but the only thing that comes to mind is the main gates. Or the sewers, again.

Meanwhile, Veska sneaks back through the building to the front. Her claws catch a little on the wooden floors, but thankfully it seems like the dwarf is a little too preoccupied to notice. It sounds like he's...washing himself? Slipping the keys back on the hook, she creeps back through with no trouble. Once back outside, she deftly closes and relocks the back door. She can't really slide the bolts back into place from this side, though.
