Re: Tests and Trials

Post by Rodgeir » Mon Aug 19, 2019 10:18 am

Joe gets the distinct impression these furry land pirates are sizing her up before making a run at her booty.

The loud talking is definitely making them agitated. Things come to a head as Ves starts yelling and shooing. One of the raccoons make a throaty hissing growl towards Ves and moves towards her and another quickly tries to get into Joe's bag. The other three scatter, hiss growling as they scamper into the rain.

Kroshav is relieved to find the raccoon took nothing but does notice it chewed a bit on a shoulder strap. Jolly just sits on his root wiping water from his eyes shaking his head.

"Gods damned raccoons now?"

((What's Joe doing about her thief and Ves doing about the standoff?))

Ves will jab at it with her staff, not afraid to give it a thump if it keeps harassing them.

The menace facing Ves hops to the side, claws at the staff and springs away.

Victory belongs to Ves this day.

The raccoon veers towards Joe's bag of tasty treats but Joe manages to swing it away. The raccoon tries to stop it's forward progress but instead skids comically on the muddy ground before landing on its head a few feet from Kroshav.

Joe can only look on in sadness as the perfect companion flees while hissing something likely uncomplimentary in raccoon back towards her.

((Well that was sad.))

Once the animals are gone, "Joe, I'm a bit confused. Why the interest in the raccoons?"

((What path are you taking today? The Cut is close and you can follow along it or you can choose to go east and then south to try and circumvent the Cut. The goblin map indicates how long you would need to go to the east to do so (about a day). Following the Cut appears to be the quickest way though it will be slower than traveling in the Cut in normal conditions, you should be able to find the end of the ravine before the end of the day and can continue directly south.

The goblin map indicates a few points of danger to the east and south of where you. Just what the danger is and how real the danger is isn't clear from the map.))

Kroshav's not much for map reading even when it's an accurate, well made map, so he's just trusting whatever the others decide.

Let's take the fast route, but put a little distance between us and the edge of the cut (like 100 feet or so), in case we're being tracked from the far side.

Jaq nods, "That sounds good. No way to get really lost if we stay near the Cut."

(This isn't a route we traveled before, correct? Covering new ground?)

While Jaq and Ves discuss the day's hike Jolly and Kroshav (and Lurn today?) spar in the rain and mud. Jolly's technique is slightly better but the intensity of the day before isn't there and the long night seems to have slowed him down a bit as well.

Deciding to follow the same route along rather than in the Cut the group set out. The day gradually becomes brighter and the rain stops but the clouds stay put. Most of the ground within a hundred feet of the Cut slants towards the ravine and the group have to frequently hop over little, temporary rivers emptying into it.

Within a mile of their camp Lurn spots a mark on a tree that Ves identifies as belonging to the clan of the goblins they ran into. As they walk on several more trees have been marked. They all say more or less the same thing, "Ours, bugger off."

Despite the clouds the day rapidly becomes muggy and it seems all the local flying insects are out in force. Particularly the biting kind. The party comes to a wide (25 ft), shallow (six inches) stream pouring water towards the Cut that they will need to either wade through or head deeper into the forest to see if it narrows.

((Or fly over, etc.

Can I get a perception roll from everyone.))

Kroshav uses the poor conditions to teach his sparring partners the importance of stable footing, and not overbalancing and sliding.

((Sure, Lurn will join the sparring this time. Only other thing he could do would be test the dice again, and he needs time to think of a question with a clear answer.))

When they come to the little stream, Lurn glances at the water and shrugs, "It's barely more than ankle deep, even for you average folk. We should just cross it. I can carry Joe if need be."

Everyone notices a goblin peering around a tree at them from the far side of the water. It notices that everyone is looking at it and curses. It doesn't move around the tree and calls out in angry common,

"You ones that trade with Dernt? You ones that hobs want?"

Perception: 1D20+2 = [13]+2 = 15

"Why do you ask, my friend? What do you want from us??"

Jaq tries to get a read on why the goblin is interested in us...does it seem like it is interested in chatting with us, or turning us in for some bounty? Does it seem like it is truthful?
