Really? Really? No one else has mentioned Homestuck yet? I didn't know that was possible.
If you have the time to get caught up on a several thousand pages long multimedia web epic, read you some. It's got time shenanigans and truckloads of universe building, though it starts out kinda slow, since true to the CYOA format, it was originally reader command driven. It's one of the biggest (both in fanbase and in sheer length due to creator Andrew Hussie's absurd update rate which, even with two gigantic update pauses of several months, still averages something like three pages a day) webcomics on the internet and between the constant use of .gifs, flash, and even later on some HTML4 shenanigans makes it one of the only truly WEBcomics, not just 'comics that are hosted on the internet'. Definitely has the best soundtrack of any webcomic.

If you don't have time for all of that, try its ancestor, Problem Sleuth. Entirely driven by reader commands, also takes advantages of .gif panels frequently, and involves three hardboiled detectives in a crazy-ass CYOA which rather than time shenanigans mostly involves spacial abstract crazy-awesomeness and quantum states. If you like all the potential world-bending stuff you can do with Oblivious you'll love this.

And inspired by Homestuck, what started out as a subcomic on their forums became its own comic, Prequel, set in the universe of Elder Scrolls: Oblivion about a week before the actual game. Its subtitle, "Making a Cat Cry: The Adventure" is apt, because Katia Managan, recovering alcoholic and Khajit of questionable repute, cannot catch a break. It's an emotional rollercoaster, and oh my god do I want to jump halfway into it and just show off the HTML wizardry the comic engages in, it is SO COOL, but spoilers.

ANYHOW! Other stuff too!

Monster Pulse is an AMAZING deconstruction of the kids-with-monsters, digimon/pokemon type scenario, taken more realistically and seriously with some of the best written teenage/older kid characters you're going to find.

Monsterkind (similar name but very different story) is about... well it's still in the world build phase, but basically it's about a world where half the population is generically referred to as 'monsters' in a vaguely Jim Henson-esque way, but are treated as second class citizens and relegated to districts increasingly segregated and gentrified by the ratio of how many of them are human and non-human. But it's not nearly as depressing as that concept makes it sound.

And for something non-serial, Awkward Zombie. Pop culture comics mostly related to video games. Very funny.

I thought I was the only one on both forums!

If anyone else wants to read it, Homestuck is currently on hiatus for the next 52 days, 6 hours, 51 minutes, and 7 seconds, so there's probably time to catch up before updates resume. Maybe.

Thanks for the link. I just read through the whole thing, or at least the comics based on games I recognize.

I used to actively be a mod on their forums since back when everyone was making their own forum adventure webcomics they needed more and people voted me into it, but then school and work and World of Warcraft started taking up all my time, so I pretty much just lurk the media forums every once in a while now.

I also want to second recommendations people have given earlier for Ava's Demon (though it's update schedule is starting to bug me) xkcd (and what-if xkcd) for being intelligent and funny, Manly Guys Doing Manly Things for being generally awesome and funny in a way similar to Awkward Zombie but more broadly, that author's side project Platinum Black which I won't link directly because its kinda gory and there's some nudity but that shouldn't bother people nearly as much as the fact that it never seems to update, Dr McNinja because Chris Hastings does great work at making such an absurd over the top story somehow never jump the shark or get stale, Penny Arcade and LFG because who doesn't read those, Order of the Stick because that man knows his tropes amazingly well, and I'll also heave a sigh of dissatisfaction with Sinfest because while it's still beautiful, it's gotten obnoxiously opinionated with it's harshly feminist tone (of the "so such thing as male allies", "all men are potential rapists" variety)

I found myself wondering what the absolute bottom-ranked comic on TopWebcomics.com might chance to be. It apparently turns out to be this. I have no idea if it's any good, but a quick glance at the current page really didn't make it look like it deserves to be called THE ABSOLUTE WORST, out of just a hair over 8000 competitors. I can think of at least three webcomics which I've managed to enjoy, but which are more-or-less-objectively worse than this looks to be.

I don't think quality is so much the reason it's at the very bottom. I'd say it's because it only has 5 pages and I don't think it has updated frequently or well marketed, considering the copyright is still listed as 2014.

TWC isn't about the overall quality of a comic, it's essentially a popularity contest.

And there are hundreds of comics without a single vote this month yet.
All of them are "last".
Also quite some professional comics do not advertise to vote on TWC anymore (or never did), and are therfore much lower ranked than their popularity would suggest.

*clears throat nervously.*

Hope I don't catch hell for this, but I figure since this is a spot where people were suggesting comics...

A couple days ago a friend of mine and myself started our own webcomic, Storvargen. It's a dark fantasy story following one woman's efforts to protect herself and those in her charge from a world that is not only conscious, but hostile. Massive, fantastic predators, dark fey, monsters, people and more await. Also puns.

We were partially inspired by Goblins and a lot of other grimmer fantasy comics and books. You can find it at: storvargen.tumblr.com.

If you like what you see there, then we just started up a facebook page for it: www.facebook.com/storvargen. We announce updates on that as well as on twitter at twitter.com/Tiger_Shark

We update every Monday and Thursday.

Anyway, sorry about spamming all that but I thought this might be a good place to make the suggestion. If you're interested, take a look. I hope y'all enjoy.

Oh, nice. I just scrolled through, and although the first page I saw was the semi-comedy shoryuken, which threw me at first, the art is great and the story's promising. I'll try to remember to check back!

Missing a clickable link for the tumblr and twitter links...
Anyway: looked at it, and while it does look promising, it starts to look like a world which is not my style....

Good luck with it anyway!

You're absolutely welcome to advertise for your own comic here. Thunt actively encourages self-promotion of comics, especially for new authors. So yes, this is the right area to share your comic. :) Good luck!

Happy 4/13! Homestuck is somehow already six years old. New updates are finally rolling out again, and I feel obligated to recommend it once again to those who think they can handle reading such a ridiculously long webthing. If you start now, it might only take you an entire week!

Rusty & Company has suffered a few setbacks in its already-agonizingly-slow posting schedule, but at last it draws toward the conclusion of what we believe has been its longest chapter to date. And it's about time...

You want a slow comic with long update breaks? (104 pages since 31st of October 2001)
After 2 full years without updates, Outsider finally has two new pages again.
The comic is Sci-Fi, Earth and her five colonies finally meet intelligent non-humans, BUT the first thing they find out, that there's an all-or-nothing war raging between two species, and neither of them accepts others to "not help in their war", so staying neutral is not an option, but how to choose which side to take when the winners will show no mercy towards anyone who might have helped the other?

I've only been recently lured into the story (when someone posted an "update" notification on a different board), and although the comic is 13 1/2 years old, 104 pages are read rather quickly, with very pleasant quality, and now I'm starving for more.

We have observed similarly prolonged hiatuses (hiati?) on www.futurepig.com - Pavel apparently refuses to post single-page updates, but insists on waiting for a complete "strip" of some 12-20 pages to be completed before publicising it.

Trial of the sun !!! (http://trialofthesun.com/)

I can not recommend this one enough!

Image

Summary (from tvtropes.org):

Long ago, when the world was divided, a war was waged in the names of gods. From that conflict, several nations of man were united by the Goddess Amari. From the blood of Enorans, one of the human races, the Goddess created the Elves, the Kipira, and the Lamiak, and through their covenant with the Goddess, the Saltblood Barrier was erected. It was an unsurpassable defenseÔÇöno enemy could cross the threshold of Saltblood and liveÔÇöand so the newly founded Anocura knew a peace that would last for generations.

Just so long as the Elves continue to hold vigil over the Ark, of course.

Its now the early 600s. Racial tensions formed in the early days of cultural assimilation have not abated. Eliano Davrey, a fourteen year old Sworn Maiden from a respectable family, is considering joining a training phalanx. Unexpectedly, the Goddess Amari, who normally hibernates for years at a time, arrives in Saltrust. That night a close friend of Eli brings him news that theres been a riot in the smiths quarter, and that his father and uncle have been gravely injured

Image

It is usually updated twice a week.

The author of Trial of the sun is also the creator of Miamaska (http://miamaska.com/). Also a really great story (updated once per week).

So i want to gush about romantically apocalyptic, the visuals are just sooooooo amazing! I personally also enjoy the somewhat whimsical nature of the plot, while i mainly read the comic to look at the art.
Anyone else here a fan of Ze Captain?

Also i see Stand Still. Stay Silent is only mentioned briefly here. Blasphemy! It is a beautiful piece that until now also does a good job of emerging the reader in a post apocalyptic world. Trolls and Lynx spirit animals! There is soooo much goodnes here :D

I'm not good at writing long reviews of things so go check them out yourself!

Do you like superheroes? If so, we cannot recommend this highly enough.

grrlpowercomic.com/archives/1876

While we have enjoyed this comic for a long time, we mention it today for two reasons:

1. Having lived most of our life in abject misery, we are happier today than we have been within our entire memory (little of it that we possess).

2. This page makes an excellent "on-ramp" for the storyline, as it consists mostly of a recap of recent events, while introducing brilliantly deconstructionist ideas in the comic, and fascinating philosophical asides in the associated creator commentary. Between this page and the cast page (presuming you don't have time to binge the archive), you ought to be able to pretty much figure out everything other than one last-panel in-joke, and should easily be able to enjoy following the comic thereafter.
