Re: A month in ....
Bear in mind that a decent percentage of that 40lb weight loss will be "there's nothing in his insides any more" combined with dehydration. Give him between 5 and 10lbs that will come back quickly when he starts eating/drinking properly again, that will not be any physical extra mass on his body, just food that is making its way through and water that is being naturally and correctly retained.
(Also, Corrupt User, he can't be running a deficit of 4000cal a day unless he's spending all day jogging as well as not eating - like Vector was saying s/he did - humans don't eat that much normally so "not eating" alone won't do that.)

Re: A month in ....
He typically spends most of his waking hours sitting at a desk, drawing. That's 7 days a week, mind you. Often well into the night. When I stayed over, he was up and drawing every day before I'd had breakfast, and still at it when I went to bed.
He did say that he's been trying to take more breaks and short walks recently, given the heart scare.
But I'm trying not to extrapolate from that into unsolicited advice. I'm keeping away from that thread.

Sorry Thunt, I'm just not that kind of guy. I need more than one person in my life. What we have is special, but I'm not giving up Randall Monroe, Zachary Wienersmith, Rob Balder, Howard Taylor, Rich Burlew, Ethan Nicolle, The Foglios, Matt Melvin/Rob Denblecker/Dave McElfatrick/Kris Wilson...Thunt wrote:...y'know... go steady?
Wow with the exception of Kaja Foglio, that's all guys. Girls, make moar webcomics.

I recommend Kory Bing and Erica Moen, if you're looking for good female webcomic writers. There's Jenny Breeden too... and a few others. As we have all seen these last few months, webcomic-making is stressful. Perhaps we girls are more choosy in choosing our art-related jobs. Who knows?
Most artists are careful to keep their real life private from the webcomic.... And Thunt is up there in my All Time Favourite Webcomic Artists, not least because he does let us into his life a little.

Shannon Garrity? She did Narbonic (which was okay despite the gag-a-day format and horrendous tone shift in the penultimate finale) and Skin Horse, as well as guest writing a story for the Foglios. Oh, and Chu, who writes and draws Slightly Damned (which is..good, but not goblins)(it gets better in the second book).

Oh, how could I forget Coelasquid? :facepalm
Her comic update (Manly Guys Doing Manly Things) this past Monday was probably the best one she's done, because aside from being well deserved and earned revenge, it all makes perfect sense. That is, no asspulls, no railroading, it just fits. Well, assuming CB gets his revenge anyway.
Also, need to respond to this

Which is why he should see a doctor. Even if 10 of those pounds are from the lack of salt and reduced, umm, let's just call it bowel contents, that's still 3000 calories a day. Which is more than an adult typically eats. This can be caused by parasites or other diseases, or simply an active lifestyle. Plus massive amounts of stress (which is the most likely cause; I'm sort of in the dark until the blog post) can also play a part. But it isn't healthy no matter what; even if you are exercising and dieting to lose weight, losing that much that fast is still dangerous, as it does put a lot of stress on the body.nikohl wrote: (Also, Corrupt User, he can't be running a deficit of 4000cal a day unless he's spending all day jogging as well as not eating - like Vector was saying s/he did - humans don't eat that much normally so "not eating" alone won't do that.)

I second Coelasquid (dang I got behind on that
). And add Ursula Vernon's Digger, which is a *completed* webcomic story and very, very good.

Don't forget Alina Pete. Weregeek might have done a sudden about-face on PLOT! recently, ie removing the original one, but it's still a good comic drawn by an awesome lady.
CU: I wasn't denying that losing that much weight that fast is unhealthy, I was just saying he can't be running a 4000/day deficit.

Re: A month in ....
It actually is possible. The average medieval peasant consumed about 4500 calories a day (and was still hungry!) because their day was spent constantly doing manual labor. Phelps was known to go through 12,000 calories a day because he spent 10 hours a day training. The recommendation of 2000-2500 calories a day is based on a typical modern lifestyle where most people are unlikely to do moderate exercise more than twice a week.
Heavier people also use more calories just by being heavier. While I don't know how heavy Thunt was, it's possible that his body would use up 3000 calories a day just from being heavy. And an extra amount of stress can cause the body to kick up the metabolism, so it is very possible for a heavy guy under extreme stress to use over 4000 calories a day without running marathons. Another possibility is internal parasite or illnesses, as those can easily kick up the metabolism. One of the symptoms of AIDS is rapid unexplainable weight loss, after all.

I'm talking about Thunt, not hypothetical historical humans or athletes. Thunt can't be running a 4000/day deficit.
