January 24th: Not Fast Enough

Post by Aegis J Hyena » Sat Jan 24, 2015 11:18 am

Well, this just turned a little dark. Lots of guilt there for not making it to Chief in time before the big -10 hit.

I wonder if minmax seeing goblins acting 'human' and caring will make him realize they are similar.. same as with kin. Even if it's enough for a teamp-up

That was kind of unexpected. Love the mini-combat show of strength vs dexterity.

I'm honestly kind of surprised that Big Ears hasn't jumped in and announced that he senses no evil in Minmax, he's always he first one to avoid an altercation like this.

Would that do any good? I don't think Complains would be likely to listen to him.

Complains is fully aware that Ears's evil sense is spot on, if Complains doesn't listen to that then they deserve to cut him down.

No. Complains knows that Minmax killed many goblins in their last encounter. Learning that he isn't evil would be more likely to challenge his faith in the system than his own judgement.

He is angry, and anger makes people stupid. Let's not condemn him for a moment of irrationality.

Complains trying for suicide by proxy? Didn't really expect that. He's usually trying to come off as the tough and gruff one. I guess I shouldn't be surprised as we've seen him get pretty upset over things before (Fumbles in Brassmoon, Chief at the bridge).

Oh. Man... Complains.

He and Minmax are feeling just about the exact same emotions right now.

Maybe they are soulmates, and that is the reason for the same (or very similar) IME-colour?

This update definitely didn't work for me. I'm glad that the situation was resolved without any casualties, but Complains's breakdown doesn't seem as in-character as him being angry in the first place, and I found the whole thing eye-rollingly maudlin, rather than genuine. Still, I'm not annoyed by it, so much as just glad that it's out of the way; I can't wait to get back to the action.

It's not just IME... Scars they dealt to eachother look very similar. And they are both barbarians. And they are both orange (at the moment). And this:

It's really interesting to see Thunt's art style changing over time, even over his several month hiatus. Even this comic, IMO, looks a little different than how he drew the goblins when they were outside the Dragon's Maw just moment's ago.
Or I'm just going nuts :P

Also, I'm really interested to see how Minmax goes on through this situation. Pretty obvious now the GAP aren't going to chop him to bits. I feel like the poor guy's too depressed to trudge through yet another dungeon crawl, though.

We've had years, you and I, to get over Chief's death. For Complains it happened much less than an hour ago and he's been fighting or running just about the whole time -- with these desperate moments yammering inside him. Maudlin? Perhaps it'll seem less so if you refresh your memory of Complains' raw, raging, grief-stricken burden of guilt that he was specifically charged with binding Chief's wounds, and failed to save him.

Edit: "Back to the action?" Wait, how is this not action?

Oh my. Thaco's expression in panel 4. Just brilliantly drawn.

Actually, I really love the way Thaco is drawn on this whole page.

He wouldn't listen, but he also knows how capable an ass-kicker Ears is. It boils down to if A) Complains ends up Raging, and B) if he thinks he can -take- Ears. Then Thac0 steps in and cuts him down, maybe?
SUGauthor wrote:Complains is fully aware that Ears's evil sense is spot on, if Complains doesn't listen to that then they deserve to cut him down.
I think he knows this, but he ain't going to admit it out loud, not after all those goblins were cut down.

Third loss (Calling it now, Thac0 dies in the Maw?) causes him to crack and Ears says "he's gone evil"... with expected consequences.

I think Complains has a much larger destiny than turning evil and being cut down.

Minmax is on a very slow road to self-improvement, but I'd be shocked to discover he's free of evil in his present state.

That's not how it works. Evil is all or nothing in D&D. A neutral character doesn't ping on the detect evil radar.

Big Ears has been shown to be able to detect various degrees of evil, so that's not a binary value within the story. You can be a little evil or a lot evil, but if a Man like Minmax shows up as not at all evil then that just means that measure isn't worth very much.
