Missing page?

Post by Digitality » Thu Apr 25, 2013 6:08 am

Am I imagining it, or is there a page missing in the archives between

http://www.goblinscomic.com/12132011/

&

http://www.goblinscomic.com/12202011-2/

I seem to recall an update where Kin works out what the oblivion holes are and talks about them. if you follow the progression of the comic from there she never does, and eventually mentions copying oblivion later with regards to Oblivious. Which seems jarring without the exposition.

No. That page never existed.

I don't remember any page in between there.

In all seriousness, we just had a lot of exposition about oblivion two pages prior to that. I don't think Kin needed to rehash that out loud. (Although Thunt having to make a blog post about them may indicate the contrary.) She's very smart. She realized what was happening and what it implied. I don't think we needed to see more than that.

Maybe that page did exist, but it fell into an oblivion hole, so nobody remembers it.

If so, Digitality must be from the past or something messed up like that.

I always asked myself how Kin could explain what these holes are (and name them correctly), without having PsiMax explain what he's doing....

She logically worked it out on this page:
http://www.goblinscomic.com/12132011/
But she never gets to explain to the others what she knows because that's when Psimax shows up.
Her face on the second to last panel is priceless.

I know she worked out that it makes everyone "forget" about whatever fell in.
Yet interesting, that she uses the same term ("oblivion") as PsiMax does.

It's a good word for it. And Kin has a good vocabulary.

Also, it makes sense from a writer's perspective. We just had two pages about how these were "oblivion holes" and Psimax wanted to create "oblivion" and oblivion oblivion oblivion. Makes sense to keep using the same word even if we have different characters describing the same thing. Makes things less confusing for readers. It also sets up the name "Oblivious," which certainly deserves going a little bit out of the way if you have to. (And it wouldn't have worked if Kin was using a different word to describe the holes.)

You're right. For us as readers that's good.
Yet, how did Minmax know that that dink-face created the oblivion holes?
PsiMax never talked about bringing oblivion near our FMK-party.
The name is good. Yet, it could have been a spell, or something inherent to the MoM to force the people to continue towards the exit (pressure, time-clock). It could even have been part of the resetting mechanism....
(Except that the holes stopped expanding after Psimax talked to FMK about the missing variable. That's the only indication FMK have that PsiMax is causing this.

I doubt that it was a coincidence that Oblivion Holes opened up and at the same time a powerful Psion teleported in talking about how unknown variables were throwing off his work. They likely worked it out off-screen.

Also, Kin is likely a non-PC, introduced to help the players (Forgath and Minmax) through a particularly difficult dungeon (which has to be solved on the first run, otherwise it would not "reset" the memories of the players), and is knowledgeable of lore, which would otherwise never be known to the players.

Like, how Minmax would survive if the Kin and Forgath reach the exit while Minmax is still alive.
I mean, how many Silkscale clan Yuan-ti needed to go through this dungeon to find all that out?
It's not like the creator of the MoM left a manual behind.

It would also be typical DM-ing to remove any strong non-Player Character after a dungeon, so that the players need to rely on each other again than on some all-knowing non-PC. And as Minmax is good in role-playing the trueseeing towards Kin, chances were that Minmax would follow Kin carrying the Jade Teapot, instead of teleporting away with Forgath. So Herbert had to find another way to remove Kin.

And apparently the DM is experimenting in bringing two different playing groups together. His tuesday sittings as Maglubiyet (GAP) and his thursday sittings as Herbert will now go on an all-weekend full-play session together.

At least, that is one way it plays in my mind.
