Re: Civilization IV (985.10)
I can't wait until I have a tinkerer to play with, I have some ideas. Oh we're going to have some fun!
We should see if we can create more cloth and some kind of rope with the fibers from the cloxin tubers. We also need to find a replacement for wood, something strong and light but somewhat flexible. We may also want to see if we can use gloaches' carapaces for anything like sleds to traverse the desert.

The Situation:
Life in Oasis Hearth has settled into a pleasant routine between farming the fungus, the Gloaches' Waste Light, and regular services to Ol' Mags. The storm that was heading in never materialized; it evaporated before it reached the dome and didn't deposit a single drop of water on the parched land above you. You're quite certain that if it did storm, that it would run off rather than be absorbed by the ground; the ground is just too hard for water retention. On the plus side this means you could probably dig holes or pits for the water to run into and just store it that way (it'd beat using the oasis for a community bathing pool). Lots of work has been done trying to dream up a way to transport water long distances so you can explore, but stone is heavy and you have very little in the way of other materials to use.
The Gloaches do not react to attempts to "harvest" their Waste Light and just sit there on the tops of the mushrooms. You've managed to collect quite a bit of it (they produce a lot); normally it'd just drip off and run down into cracks in the ground and disappear if you were not here. The back wall of the depression is now a dark stained black from watching blobs and globs of the stuff turn solid and try to move to sea level above you, where it just bursts and evaporates the same way it did earlier. You're sure it's all evaporation, so you're not sure what will happen with the next storm that comes through if this stuff is in the air.
The first "chaos magic" event has occured. Out of nowhere one day the entire oasis surrounding the temple glows with a neon pink-purple light that plays havoc with your senses. Those that were caught in the oasis when this magical "burst" flared up found that their skin had sprouted a second layer, similar to an armadillo's skin. If this were just a few more degrees in intensity, you'd have armored skin. For now though you'll have to settle for thicker, heavier skin that is more resistant to damage (but it does give a +1 to AC). It does not slow the goblins down in any way, and while it might be a -little- unsightly, it's not anywhere near close to having any major effect on social relations due to appearance.
Much of the month is spent on the surface, again working in two hour shifts at longest in order to construct a brick "base" to watch the amount of sand trickling down into the "Downdraft Zone" as well as watch the weather and just in case, watch for anything that might be crossing the desert out there. You spend quite a lot of time baking the bricks and making sure everything is perfect, but it's clear that you're getting just a little lazy. There's -nothing- out here, and having a visible base for someone to approach and examine/interact with might be something to enrich your goblins' lives. With that in mind you decide not to completely conceal it under a sand dune, and instead leave about half exposed so that way anything passing by will see it's not natural and may come to investigate... ... ... and investigate, something does!
Towards the end of the month, those goblins visiting the surface to survey/check the dome/do guard duty report a set of six huge wagons. The wheels are made of black wood that has been polished to a stone-like shine, reflecting sunlight instead of absorbing it while the largest wagon's wheels are highlighted with silver. The wagons themselves are also made of wood, which would be a valuable treasure for you living all the way out here. The wagons are open to the sky and show heavy signs of use, wear, and tear. One of the wagons carries several ornate chests each locked with a wrought-iron padlock as thick as a goblin's fist. The rest seem to carry sacks of food and what might be trade goods, though you're not quite sure. What you DON'T see is any sign of a water barrel or means to store water, either for the wagon owners or their huge clydesdale/Arabian horses.
The wagons stopped about a hundred feet from the dome, and two VERY large creatures in loose all-black nomad robes got out and approached the dome. Only their eyes are uncovered, and it's plain that they are not human or even humanoid (way too big, maybe about eight feet tall but moving too smartly to be a stupid race like ogres or giants). At least twenty more (some on clydesdale-back, some on foot) were in the group staying at the wagons.
One of them pulls back his hood, revealing... you're not sure what to think about this. It looks like a shaved Kodiak bear. When he lifts up his arm to peer through what appears to be a spyglass and the sleeve falls down, it shows that all the fur has been shaved or they are naturally hairless. From the wrist up, talons like a gryphon's take the place of hands, with six "fingers" on each. Each talon is wreathed in a metal shell except for the tips; they're wearing metal gauntlets special-made to them. They are wearing sandals, though the foot paws (bear) seem to also have six digits each. One of them peers through a spyglass and has obviously seen the difference in ground that makes up the dome, and from the way he's looking the base over, he's pretty sure "that rock formation" wasn't here the last time they were here.
The two engage in conversation for several minutes in another language, then turn back toward their wagons and appear to confer as a group about what to do.
Several minutes pass and they decide to make camp, setting up a large arabic-looking tent made of rough unadorned cloth that doesn't appear to have seen much use. They station two guards outside the tent and go inside just as a sandstorm picks up, forcing you to seek shelter inside your mud brick base on top of the dome (though they didn't spot you as you moved to hide). It is obvious they came to the depression for a reason, given the amount of supplies they appear to be carrying (and the obvious lack of anything ELSE out here that might be a landmark). Resupply? You're not sure. There was nothing here before Ol' Mags dropped you here, not even the oasis. It is obvious that they did not see any goblins, but they DID see the dome, and they DO know that your base is not a "natural rock formation". They know that someone, or something, is now either making a den or is living here.
Half of them are armed with giant wooden mallets or solid iron greatmauls. Two carry falchions (the guards outside the tent) and seem to carry authority, wearing dark red headbands. Three wield staves with various animal skulls mounted on one end, gryphon feathers hanging from chains in the eye sockets. The largest (standing nearly ten feet tall) carries a two-handed sword whose blade is as wide as a goblin's and who clinks as he moves; he's wearing at -least- chain mail under those robes, if not something heavier. None of them carry shields, though there are several shields mounted on the wagons themselves to defend against arrows. Just one shield is about three goblins tall. The rest are bare-taloned, though with those talons, they could crush a goblin in one claw. Hell, those things could take an ogre's head clean off!

I'm a fan of B instead of C, since all we have to offer basicly is literaly shit.
Edit: Unless I'm mistaken this is all we have that we might offer to them:
Quite a bit of Cloxin Cement Powder, multiple varieties of mushroom spores, several stone containers of Gloach Waste Light, several stone containers of Pelto Nut Toxin
Would you like to receive any of those things or get insulted?

What to do with the shaved bears is a difficult decision. They could be friendlier than they look, but I kind of doubt it. I suspect any goblin who tries to bring them a gift is dying or, at the very least, being taken prisoner. I think we should stay away entirely. It's too early to be risky.
