Oh, really?! I'm upset, that Duke doesn't get the situation from the readers point of view. That's exactly the idea - to remove the text message from the update clock without contacting THunt. I do think there is no permission needed for that under such circumstances.WearsHats wrote:The update clock is run by Duke, the web admin for the comic page and the forums.
Normally, the clock is automated. Duke only needs to step in when an adjustment needs to be made. Normally, he does so when Thunt tells him to do so and what it should say. But Thunt has not been able to communicate normally in the last few months, so Duke has been doing his best based on the information available. A couple of times, I've seen people here misunderstanding the clock message so I've explained the problem and suggested that he change it. (I suggested that he get rid of the current message, but he said he wanted to try to contact Thunt first. I think he may also have some other things going on. I know he's been tinkering with the server settings lately, I think to ensure that there was no Heartbleed vulnerability.)

I imagine Duke's point of view is that he does not want to muck around with Thunt's website without his permission. I doubt it's that he 'doesn't understand your point of view', more that he's sticking to his own principles. Just because you don't think permission is needed doesn't mean he doesn't think the exact opposite.Moroser wrote:Oh, really?! Re: Goblins Update ETA? Anyone?
This isn't worth getting upset over. Thunt doesn't control the update clock. The text may sometimes be out of date, especially during unusual circumstances. Removing the text without talking to Thunt may be your idea, but, as Nikohl said, Duke may not think it's the right thing to do.
It's also possible that it got lost in the shuffle because Duke has more important things to do. Making sure the servers are secure, for example, is a lot more important than removing some words which are, by now, very obviously no longer applicable.
The clock is there to be an automated sidebar tool for when things are running normally. That's it. Try not to put too much stock in it, okay?

There is a subforum here for that sort of thing. If you have any ideas, post them there.TripsTraps wrote:We should pull together and do something as a community for Thunt. Like we did before.

Re: Goblins Update ETA? Anyone?
This really hits the crux of the matter - though I think it probably applies to those other people, too. ;^)willpell wrote:I think we should not try to hold him to the same kind of standards that we apply to other people - people who are certainly valuable contributors to society, just not in a capacity that's quite so unique and idiosyncratic.
Many of us (I just joined the forums, myself) have no idea what has been happening in Thunts life. Many years ago I had what might have been a mini-breakdown. Very mini. I was at work and just suddenly started crying uncontrollably for know reason. It lasted about 30 minutes and had no other impact on my life. I never figured out why I burst into tears. If I can't figure out why that happened to me, how can I understand what Thunt is going through? I know next to nothing about him. I have to trust his wife and the moderators. If he is so uncomfortable with what is happening (not surprising, given the stigma associated with any kind of mental illness) that he cannot talk to us himself, and doesn't want others to go into detail, we have to respect that. I hope he can come back to Goblins, or, if necessary, find someone else to finish the story, but first and foremost, I want him to get well. If that means dropping Goblins and never looking back, I hate the idea, but for his own good and the good of his family, that's what he should do.
What I don't think he needs to do - or we should request - is set a deadline to get the next comic up. If someone can post regular updates (once a month is plenty for me), if only to say, "He's doing better," or "He's still not ready" it would be nice, but if even that is too much pressure at this point, I'll live. I have other comics I check in on every once in a while to see if they're back. A couple of times I've been rewarded with new comics. I hope Goblins will be one of those, but if letting it go means Thunt is able to heal and be the husband and father he wants to be and his family needs, that is ultimately more important than me finding out what happens in this story.
Get well, Thunt, whatever it takes.

Re: Goblins Update ETA? Anyone?
Guys, I understand you all wanna help Thunt, but if his problem is as bad as he said it is, only professional could help him. And whatever nice gesture you wish to do could cause more stress, since he cut himself off the world...so I wouldn't risk it. My best friend suffers from something similar to Thunt's but worse and she hasn't been able to do a single thing for more than a year, no matters the help she received from friends or family. Not even a psychologist, because in her case it wasn't a matter of "mental therapy" but a chemical imbalance in the brain (and stress triggered it a lot of the time, then she suffered, which caused more stress and so on...an Ouroboros). Only a neurologist has been able to treat her and she's on her way to be cured.TripsTraps wrote:We should pull together and do something as a community for Thunt. Like we did before.
So, in my humble opinion, the best way for you to help Thunt is to recommend to him (or better: to Danielle) some specialists in his proximity (psychiatrists or neurologists, I suggest) and/or keep visiting the main site.
I don't want to undermine your efforts or your good intentions, but just be cautious. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think the best time to make a surprise of sort to him, would be after his definitive return.

Anybody who is frustrated with their inability to console Thunt is cordially invited to console me instead. I may be almost as fucked in the head as him, to judge by recent events...but I don't make a webcomic, so no legions of adoring fans for me.

Re: Goblins Update ETA? Anyone?
Thanks a lot! No generic doctor o psychologist could help her (because most of the medical world couldn't diagnose what she had), then one day she found a community (on Facebook, I think) for people who suffer from panic attack, in various frequency or magnitude. Through that, she discovered a neurologist, one of the firsts in Italy who studies the "panic attack syndrome" and cures it. It's a long road, with bumps and stops along the way, but the finish line is only one, it's only a matter of time.RocketScientist wrote:I'm glad your friend is getting help and is on the way to recovery, Hobogoblin.
That's why I suggested a psychiatrist or a neurologist. Brain chemistry is not something everyone is adept with, not even in the medical community.
