I'm so relieved to read Thunt's post. Well done, gods of brainy recoveries! I can't even imagine how someone (and how someone's Danielle) can go through an experience like this, and hope I will never have to learn for real. All I can say: take care, and wish you all the spare lucks you can find!

Key is not to give up and do nothing. Nerves need to be stimulated to repair. Very much a case of if you don't use it, you lose it. They're also a bit...slow. While Thunt can expect a reasonably fast recovery in the initial stages over the next 3 months, it can take up to a full year for everything to settle down. Endurance is going to be an issue for a while. That's normal.

I just read the entire post on the front page and was speechless for a good ten minutes.
Ok, Thunt. Out with it. Just HOW many natural 20s did you roll in a row for that? Good to see you're still with us. I never thought I'd see the day someone out-resilienced a certain pro wrestler from some 15-20 years ago...

Re: Twitter: [now] Thunt hospitalized!
I hope he's right. I'm glad he's being careful.Update on mah brain: Just got back from spending a half day in the hospital. CT scan says everything is okay, but my increasing headaches are concerning the doctors a bit. I have to go back to the hospital tomorrow morning for more tests. I'm sure I'll be back home same day.
I'm sure this isn't anything serious. It's just a bit of a speed bump on the road to healing.

CTs... that's the one where they put you in a long tunnel for half an hour, right? Or am I thinking of an MRI (which as far as I know does the same thing...)

Re: Twitter: [now] Thunt hospitalized!
CT, MRI, and PET scans are similar, but use different types of electromagnetism and can see different things. (I've had a few types over the years, and they're very similar from the patient's perspective.) They do sometimes involve lying inside a narrow tube, but more recent versions of the machines are more open and can do scans while you're seated or standing.
But, yeah, it's a non-invasive scan that creates a 3D digital map of the brain (or other targeted area).

Re: Twitter: [now] Thunt hospitalized!
MRI: Magnetic Resonance Imaging. Uses a big souped up electromagnet to make the water molecules vibrate at a certain frequency and then detects that vibration. Can be used to look at soft tissue in a fair amount of detail. Typical MRI of the head takes about 30-45 minutes depending on if contrast is used or not. Narrow tube (unless an open MRI is being done) with a lot of noise. No radiation.
CT scan: Computed tomography. A series of thin slice x-rays used to build a 3 D model of the part being scanned. Takes about 5 minutes in a fairly open tube. Fair amount of radiation (typical CT is about the equivalent of 50 x-rays). Good for looking at acute injury and checking for bleeding. Can be with or without contrast.
PET scan: Positron Emission Test: Uses a tagged form of glucose (a low level radioactive charge). Essentially a specialized nuclear scan. Used for checking for metabolic hot spots where cellular activity is high. Typically used to check for metastatic cancers, but can be used to check for brain activity. Will actually demonstrate a difference in people with depression from normal for example (the depressed brain is typically much less active metabolically). Takes about 45 minutes to do. Fairly open scanner. Small amount of radiation, but fairly expensive. Will also show inflammation such as arthritis.

Having people come in and demand that I identify objects would have been SO tempting. First arrange for someone to bring you some bananas. Wait for someone to ask you to identify therm. Answer "It's a small off duty Czechoslovakian traffic warden".

Re: Twitter: [now] Thunt hospitalized!
My favorite thing about the PET scan is that I had antimatter in my blood for a day. Heck, as someone here pointed out a while back, I had a positronic brain!
But, like Thunt, I'm very disappointed that being flooded with high intensity magnetic fields, bombarded with x-rays, injected with radioactive glucose, infused with an artificial isotope that emits antimatter, and everything else I've been through has still failed to give me super powers. I just have the mutant healing factor that started the whole mess in the first place.

Re: Twitter: [now] Thunt hospitalized!
Not entirely unexpected. Any neurologic injury in the brain has the potential to trigger seizure like activity, particularly in the first month or so after an event. Look at it as part of the healing process. Sometimes happens when the nerves are busy reconnecting. Just don't plan on any driving for a few months. (My state has a 6 month medical suspension from date of stroke or last seizure/blackout. It's mainly justified.)

Re: Twitter: [now] Thunt hospitalized!
I'm not surprised that drawing will help him recover; when I bent my left foot too many degrees inward while visiting yard sales one Oct 2014 afternoon, I spent several minutes screaming in pain and an hour hopping home on the other foot. After a week for the swelling to subside, my doctor said recovery takes several weeks and I should keep going on walks to better heal. Fortunately for me, there was a lot of walking to do visiting more yard sales and both shortly before and during the pizza party that my cousin threw for me and my parents on our visit to her just 1 month after the injury.
The brain shouldn't be any different: put the damaged body-part to use to better heal it. The part about "being careful" also parallels: During all those walks, I was of course limping.

When I had my arm broken in a mugging, the only way I found to focus on getting movement back was to try to use it to type or to flex it. Keepin' it active is important...
