A Song of Ice And Fire/Game of Thrones

I haven't read "A Dance With Dragons" yet. I was disappointed with "A Feast For Crows" when I read it (several years ago, after several years of waiting). I love the TV series and have seasons 1 and 2 on Blu-Ray, and I plan on watching season three when it starts up in a month.

So, whither Westeros?

Edit: If anyone can kill more beloved characters than Thunt, it is George R. R. Martin (and Joss Whedon, of course).

I started reading the first book only today and I am really hooked on it. It was a drastic change for me, as I've just finished reading Le Guin's second tome of the Earthsea Trilogy, but Martin's heroic fantasy is, I can see that already, one of the best the genre has to offer! The only thing that needs some getting used to is a crap-load of characters to remember. In the first four chapters I was acquainted with about 15 people, the amount I've found in two first books (sic!) of the Earthsea Trilogy.

It's not the characters you have to worry about... it's the plot lines. They're more tangled and convoluted than a yarn factory overrun with kittens. There are about 10 characters you really need to pay attention to... but you'll figure that out on your own.

Good luck, it's a well written series that makes you think and might make you root for characters you initially hate.

Initially, the only characters I truly hate are the loveable twins of the House Lannister. The rest is pretty cool and some of them classify as overly manly men (taken to the extreme).
I like how Martin presents his characters and how each chapter is from a different perspective, that is really well done. As for the plot lines: I already can see that by the 5th book it's gonna be one hell of a ride.

As for his books: I bought them for a fairly cheap price, a book set of 6, UK edition. The pace I am reading them at makes me realize I'll be dying to get my hands on the 6th installment of the series. He planned two more books which will wrap up the saga, did he not?

Sure he's forsaken his gods for another shady god and he's not mister personality BUT he has some very good aspects: First off and probably the most important one; He actuelly went to the north to defend the realm. Secondly he gives men a high position based on their ability and loyalty, not status.
And last his sense of justice might be questionable because he chopped off some of Davos his fingers, but it IS fair. Be thy noble or peasent, Stannis will give you the same treatment.

I too like John Snow and Tyrion. As of right now, I loathe Sansa (I'm up to date on all the books), but I expect a major turn for her eventually. I find that Sir Davos is up there as well as Bronn for characters I like.

In general I am annoyed with Rickon's story line. I get it, he's a young kid- how much of a role other than a Stark son will he play? Super stoked that Davos is going to search for him. Was wayyyy too shorted on Davos' story in the last book. Also Arya's story line is really slow despite the fact she is going through a lot. I'd like to see her brought back into play for the game of thrones soon,

Nope, I'm not saying that because I think they'd make a cute couple - I say that because I think the two of them combined would make the best rulers. They have similar "good" ideals and care about the people they're in charge of. It would make for a nicely united kingdom, and I think that the series will either end with the beginning of a united kingdom, or being completely destroyed. I think the two of them would be best fit to unite everything.

I know that I hadn't explained my thoughts before, but I sort of find your assumption about my reasoning rather insulting.

I agree about Tyrion - I think it will be Tyrion and Jon Snow who end up on the dragons - and through that, I think Sansa and Tyrion will end up as a successful married couple eventually. Sansa's matured a lot, and Tyrion has gotten along both with Daenerys and Jon Snow.

Ideals are all well and good but there's the fact that he's in the nights watch which means he can't marry nor does he have any possessions that would make marriage useful. He could become hand of the queen but one would think Tyrion is better suited for that. In fact I think a marriage between Tyrion and Daenarys would make more sense.

Besides, who knows what's left of Jon due to the aftermath of Dance with Dragons, he might end up like his stepmom.

I know what you mean.. but I just really don't think that Jon WILL stay with the Night's Watch, or he'll at least be reforming it. And yeah, who knows what's actually happened with Jon... but this is still my speculation! I'd be happy with Daenerys/Tyrion because I think Tyrion would, individually, be the best ruler, but he IS married to Sansa even if no one thinks she's alive.. that's bound to come out at some point. And I think Daenerys is more shallow than that, as much as I like her.

I'm at the end of book one and I must say that it is an AMAZING experience. It is not as hard to keep with the plot lines as I had imagined. Thankfully, the names of the chapters are the names of the characters and I've grown so attached to most of them, either through love or hate, that I know where am I the second I glance at the title.

I didn't watch the Game of Thrones on HBO but

I sadly figured out that Sean Bean was Ned Stark (which was not as hard - this character seems to have been written for Bean!) and thus I knew he was gonna die. He always dies in his movies... Didn't reach that particular moment yet but I dread it, Ned was one of my favorite characters, right there next to Jon and Tyrion.

Jon won't stay with the Night's Watch. Melisandre will bring him back from the dead....and having died he will be free of the restrictions of the nights watch. Plus no one in the night's watch would argue against letting the risen John leave. They are a superstitious lot anywho. But knowing Martin loves curveballs....I bet Jon refuses a direct thing with Daenerys, especially since we all want it to happen. In the end of all the fighting, I think you'll find Tommas wed and the liege of Castlery Rock, Daenerys on the throne, Mance serving in the North until Rickon is of age, and maybe Bronn serving over The Vale . Don't know how many of these I ACTUALLY think will happen. But I'm stretching my imagination. But there is still Pyke, Sunspear, Dragonstone etc. So much to figure out
